1981 Honda express SR bogs at 1/4 throttle

Post by otto-man »

This one has got me in a tailspin. It will start and idle like it should. Giving it throttle on the stand, it will rev up just fine. Road testing, it will run great up to about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle then bog to almost die. Has good compression (130 psi) and good spark. Timing is good. I have swapped all electrical with known good parts ( spark plug, cdi, voltage regulator, new battery, coil, stator and pulser). It seems to be a carb issue. I've cleaned the carb 3 times, new carb kit, replaced fuel and vacuum lines, new petcock, cleaned tank. Muffler has been "baked out". Any thoughts on what I'm missing????( I should just stick to Sprees)

Any good information on how to bypass the "auto choke" on 1981 Honda Express SR (nx50)??

Have you checked the reeds? That could cause a rich condition at idle, which you might believe is the autochoke (bystarter), then lean out as you rev higher.

Yes, reeds look like new.

Maybe I can get a chance to swap out the reeds with another SR. That's a benefit of having 2 of the same scooter. Thanks for the reply.

Had to walk away from it for awhile. Found problem. Bad gas cap!! I tried loosening cap a few times...no difference. When draining the tank to change the petcock, I noticed gas would not drain until the cap was removed completely. Another thing that made it hard to diagnose was that it would not always plug up. Now I can start growing hair again

Glad you got it sorted and thanks for the update.
You hear about this gas-cap phenomenon, but when it happens to you,
you try "everything" else first... :urban:
