Can't open the 1988 Elite 50 Seat (Trunk)

Post by JohnWI »

So like an idiot, I didn't screw down the battery cover which I believe is now blocking the lever which opens the seat. I've seen a service manual but I'm still not sure the best way to try and flip the locking lever so I can unlock the trunk and add some gasoline. Of course when I turn the key I hear the lever moving, just not enough. I tried standing it vertically and having someone turn the key but it didn't work and I'd prefer not breaking the key off as it's my only copy.

Of course the bike is 200 miles from me so I need a few tricks up my sleeve for when I head back to the boonies to try and fix it.

Bodywork is on, I suppose? Can't recall exact configuration but I'd try snaking a screwdriver to push top of latch along while key is in lock. This will provide more opening force than you'll get with the key alone.

Other would be to drive a large square-shank flathead into the lock and twist it with a crescent wrench... this will obv be pretty destructive to lock and probably body work, so a last-ditch sort of thing.
