Handlebar/Dash overhaul?

Post by Sevyndaze »

Hi guys, hoping someone can chime in here and maybe post some pics of something similar to the idea I have.

The outer handlebar cover on my Elite is pretty messed up. Cracked/missing pieces, etc. I was considering perhaps ditching both covers and going with a fully custom dash. Probably would use a TrailTech Vapor for tach/speed/temp, with the attachment for indicator lights. Then add custom blinkers and a headlight, and replace/remount the various switches.

If I were to do this, could I use the original handlebars, or would I need to get an aftermarket set? Is it even possible to switch to an aftermarket set?

If something like this is even possible, could anyone else who has done something similar offer any advice and/or pics of your setup? I’d love some inspiration!

Yeah. Makes me miss my machine shop days, when I could make just about anything. I’m gonna take all the panels off this weekend when I install the boatload of parts that have come in over the last week, so I’ll be able to get a better idea of what I’m working with then. Would love to hear from anyone else who’s done something similar though!

So I found this as Scooter Swap Shop:
https://scooterswapshop.com/products/ho ... -bar-clamp

Leave it to them to have exactly what I need! It’s pricey but having previously worked in manufacturing and knowing what it takes to make something like that, seems like a good buy.

Run a search on this site for 'handlebar stem'

A lot of folks have used BMX handebar stems with a shim to make up for the Honda's smaller fork tube.

Also, there are examples in the Scooter Showcase.

Sadly photos have been lost over time due to external photo hosting changes.

One I liked is below:

Mouse, that one looks sick! I love the painted/powder coated frame and lack of body panels. I’ll have to look in the scooter showcase as you suggested for more detailed views of the handlebars.

I just found R1's "Victoria's Secret' thread its huge. He's using aftermarket forks, so the headset may be different - but it looks great. Also check out his bars and Vapor install.

Link (Scroll down a bit from where the link starts for the pics..)

Yes! That’s exactly what I was looking for. I was thinking about possibly trying to cut the stock speedo out so I could fit the trailtech in there but still keep the fuel gauge/odometer, but this looks pretty slick! Any idea what those clamps that hold the brakes/switches are and where I could get some?

I've seen the TT installed into the dash, but it takes up most of the room. Maybe there's room for an aftermarket fuel gauge... Someone may have an example, I've not been around much here in the last few years. Here's an example custom dash install a member fabbed:

You can use Spree left/right control assemblies. Very similar controls are used on many of the Honda 80's scooters and peds, shop for a good deal. The controls have built in clamps. The control in the photo below is from an '84 Gyro (NN50) and shown slipped over a mountain bike bar.
