86 Spree won't stay running

Post by Shawn »

I recently bought a 1986 Spree that the motor was seized up on. I bought a top end kit off of Amazon and installed it. I also took apart the carburetor and cleaned it, and also cleaned the gas tank. The bike will now start and rev up, then immediately die when you put fuel or starting fluid in the spark plug hole. Any suggestions on what is causing this?

Your explanation is very puzzling.
Why are you putting fuel or starting fluid in the spark plug hole,
especially when it is starting and revs up fine ?
Secondly, it is impossible to having a running engine with the spark plug
OUT OF THE HOLE.! ! ! ? ? ?
Please clarify your statements...mm

You put gas in the spark plug hole...its starts then dies. Its obviously having problems supplying fuel to KEEP it running.

Basics is simplified to 3 categories: Suck, Bang, Blow

Your issue seems to be “Bang”...for this it requires spark and fuel. Which element is deficient? Verify spark and look to fuel. Faulty petcock would be my first look. Then carb.

Also, dont be a dlck

FYI: the other person is a Moderator for this forum. He has given sound tech advice to many hundreds of people in need....including myself. Clearly you have misinterpreted his helpful intent as I assure you it was genuine. No matter how many years I’ve been playing with small engines I remain humble knowing theres always more to learn. Thanks to people like MotorMike, I have this resource to turn to when I have questions.

Ask all the questions you want...just toughen up your tender feelings and dont get butthurt every time you dont get a powder puff answer. Use specific details with your questions to give people the crucial information needed to provide informed advice. Youd be surprised how many people ask “My scooter wont start. Whats wrong with it?” While providing NO other information.

Theres nothing but love on these boards...sometimes tough love, my brotha! Now get that scooter running and RIDE!

Greetings:

Lack of spark seems unlikely. Assuming the top end was installed airtight, compression will be presumed to be adequate. That leaves fuel in or exhaust out. My money is on a faulty petcock and/or float valve. If the spark plug (try a NEW one...) is dry, no gas is getting down from the tank.
The function of petcock and float valve are fairly easy to check by disconnecting the vacuum line from the carb/manifold and applying negative pressure. If the carb then fills - there's a drain screw at the bottom of the bowl to determine this -, the petcock would seem functional. If the carb keeps leaking out, the float valve isn't maintaining the fuel level in the bowl correctly and the engine is flooding. A gassy smell and wet plug would be the clue. 9 out of 10 times, the idle circuit is clogged if the scooter sat for a year or more. Finally check the exhaust for carbon build-up if the scooter has high mileage.
