87 spree running issues

Post by kenbelanger »

I have a 87 spree for 6 months.
Ran great when first purchased, lately its starting to runs like crap.
Funny thing, When I pull in the rear brake lever it runs a little better.
Anybody know why this happens.

Your exhaust pipe may be leaking at the cylinder connection. The carburetor may need a good cleaning. The air filter might have finally disintegrated. Check the condition of the spark plug and inspect the cap for tight connection to it. You could have some leaky gaskets or hoses.
Let us know what you find. Stay away from cheap aftermarket replacement parts until you diagnose the problem(s).

No exhaust leaks, Air filter is fine, Plug is OK, Clean fuel.
I will give the carb a good cleaning tonight.
Why does the engine run better when I pull the brake lever ?

It could be corrosion in one of the electrical connections that gets better when the brake light circuit is in use? Maybe a ground connection?

Greetings:

Bones is onto something! Hopefully the fouled ground or connection doesn't require stripping ALL the plastics to find.

Finally found the issue.
I was running it without the starter.
I put the old starter back in even though it it doesn't work and the bike runs awesome.
I guess the wiring needs to be complete to make it runs.
