85 Aero 50/ Super high Idle

Post by JModdd »

Bought a new carb off of eBay ($20) because I couldn’t find a rebuild kit for my original one. Put it on and after getting it to fire up, it isles like a bat out of *, and adjusting the idle screw does absolutely nothing. Even the air mixture screw all the way in doesn’t do anything, and that would typically kill the thing. Did I get a faulty carb? Throttle is seated correctly too, so I’m just at a loss of what is going on. Considering taking apart the original carb, cleaning it out and trying to carefully piece it back together hopefully not messing anything up.

Since I am not there to see what is wrong, I will guess.
Lost O-ring that seals the flange ?
O-ring not seated properly when installed ?
Throttle cable not installed correctly ?
Main jet has fallen out and is resting on bottom of bowl ?
Air leak ...check for vacuum sucking somewhere it shouldn't be.

Throttle slide incorrectly installed could be causing it to do that. Unscrew the top where the cable goes in and reinstall it with bevel facing the air box. The oem carburetor is superior to an aftermarket provided it's not mangled or corroded. Clean it, check for correct assembly and install stock jet then adjust air/fuel screw to spec setting to begin with. http://www.hondaspree.net/other/Aero50_SM_85.pdf Look at page 4-10

We’re gonna pull apart the carb and check.
I’m positive I seated the throttle in properly. I learned that lesson on another scooter.
We’ll also check the vacuum in other areas.

We should have probably pulled the carb apart of of the box but just assumed it was probably okay.

Did the new carb come with a throttle slide and needle?

If the scooter doesn’t start on its own ( using starter fluid to start it) and does the high idle, are those two things related? We took the original carb apart, cleaned it, and put it back on and it’s still idling high. It wasn’t doing this when I parked the scooter 1.5 years ago.

I would love to help but I'm at a point where it's difficult to assess anything over the internet. If you can post a few revealing photos for us to look over-that might help. It is possible it's just a simple adjustment or throttle cable hanging up somewhere???? I am only able to guess is what I'm saying. Maybe take it to a reliable scooter repair shop. I still think it has air leaking into the motor from somewhere it's not supposed to be. Double-check the exhaust pipe connection to the motor.
