Just acquired a 86 Honda Spree

Hey everyone,

New to the forum. I have been reading many posts but haven't found the answer to a couple questions yet.

First of all, the scooter has 916 original miles. For the most part, the Spree is in great shape for a 86. Here are my questions:

1. The front light. Do I need to replace the whole unit including the housing or can I get a new bulb? Hi Beam works fine but the running light does not.

2. Turn signals. I was told they worked fine when I bought it. When I got it home, they don't work. I have not checked fuses yet but do you think this is it?

3. I am looking for a left side decal that says Honda Spree. How much of a pain is it going to be to find one or a look a like?

4. The cover over the fuel filter... It won't stay on. Am I missing a piece that is suppose to hold this in place?

Start with that! Thanks for your help!

1. The headlight is a sealed unit. People have cut them open and done LED mods or converted to a replaceable bulb receptacle. Id just buy a good used one from a member here or Ebay.

2. Its not the fuse. Check the bulbs first, they could BOTH be blown out. Then check the wire connections following all the way up to the headset loom. Then look to the flasher relay as being bad. Do the rears work??? They use the same flasher relay.

3. Eclark and others have answers on a sticker. Every sticker on the Spree has been recreated, even down to the warning labels and helmet decal.

4. The cover is held on by single nut and a separate metal tab holding the bottom edge. The top just tucks into a lip. Its a terrible design and even with the OEM nut, tab and lip tucked...it still feels like it could fall off at any minute.

The front and rear blinkers do not work.

Where is the flasher relay? Could it have gotten wet? The previous owner power washed the moped before he listed it. When I got home with it the horn and speedo didn’t work but now 2 days later it does.

Been so long since Ive had a Spree, cant recall where they hide the flasher relay. Im thinking in the headset.

Also, if rear blinkers arent working either, could be a faulty switch on your handlebars. Sometimes the contacts get crusty inside. Pull the plug to it and jump the wires to see if theyll blink.

This is the flasher relay. Find it and see if it has come unplugged. If it looks fine, Unplug it, make sure the connections arent crusty or corroded. Maybe scrub the contacts carefully to bring the nice shiny metal out and reattach. Check for blink with key “ON”.

If that doesnt work. Dig into your headset and find this cluster of wires. Make sure one hasnt shook loose. If one is loose or unplugged...reconnect and check for blinkers. If they look connected, unplug the GREY and LIGHT BLUE, take a spare piece of wire and link them together. You MUST have the key in the “ON” position for blinkers to work. If your switch is faulty, this method will make your RIGHT blinkers flash.

With a multimeter, you can also use the charts below to test continuity of your components.

Can anyone post a photo of the fuel Percocet/filter cover appropriately installed? Would like to see the part I’m missing. Looking at 86 Spree. Thanks!

You lost me on percocet cover...but the top of the petcock cover is held on by small bent tab. Can be made out of anything. The bottom is tucked into a little notch thats molded into the plastic cover and body panels.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Autocorrect. Ha! Meant to say petcock/fuel filter. Thanks for posting that.

Does everyone use premium fuel?

Anything but ethanol. My go to fuel is 91 premium, except for the last tank of the riding season where I go half premium half VP110. I do that for storing during the winter months to help keep the tank from rusting and the carb nice and clean.

I’ve owned this for 30 miles now and I went into the garage this morning and the carb is leaking fuel onto my floor in 2 places.

What gives?!

Also, got my flashers working but now I think a bulb burned out. Are these easy to find?

What gives?!The petcock will fail and allow fuel to pass through when the engine is not being cranked. Very possibly this has happened, and in conjunction, the float needle is not fully stopping the fuel once the bowl is full. I would replace both.

Also, got my flashers working but now I think a bulb burned out. Are these easy to find? They are very common bulbs.
