85 aero 50 crank differences?

Post by harleyracer59 » Sat Jul 20, 2019 1:50 am

besides the 2 bolt intake and the lack of a kick starter, does any one know of any differences between the 85 af05e and the 86+? ive put a kicker on a buddies. had to swap the cover, outer pulley starter and starter pinion to make it work. unfortunately hes sold it so I cant look into the differences any more. are the crankshafts the same? bearings and seals? we swapped variators and weights on his so I know those parts are all interchangeable. been researching crankshafts and the vision met in, has aftermarket cranks still available. but the parts cross over says its only compatible with 85 nb50. not the 86+. im trying to figure out why... any one with any knowledge? thanks

I cant speak for the crankshaft necessarily, but i have two 85s and an 86 if you want me to take pics of anything. I might take one of the 85s partly down to change gaskets before i do a bbk

thanks nate. ide be interested in your seal #'s or measurements and if you get far enough to see # on bearing, id like to crossreference them to my 86+ af05e's. maybe the crank shaft variator shaft length and diameters. only things I can think of that might be different. lmk what you come up with, thanks

I havent pulled the second 85 open yet, i think i lost compression on the one that was known good and running. When I pulled the variator to change belts, it looked about the same as the 86. The variators looked like the same ramp and everything. Different nut size holding the driven face, but who knows if it was heehawed before me.

I believe the oil pumps are different between the two also. 86 has a cable to open the pump and the 85s do not

I wanted to follow up on this cause I was looking at stock cranks and the parts apparently are showing crossreferencing as being compatible. IIRC someone said the woodruff key is a different size but I could be wrong.

I wanted to follow up on this. I hate searching for an answer to a question and finding old threads with no resolution or answers posted.
I purchased a full cheek stuffy crankshaft for an af29 vision met-in. I installed it in one of my variated af05e's. it fit perfectly, no issues, no problems, no modifications needed. I have over 100 miles on this scooter now and have not had any problems. so if anyone is looking for a crankshaft for their 2nd gen aero or se elite af05e, the af29 vision met-in crankshaft is compatible. hope this helps someone down the road.

Is there a number stamped on the long-side case somewhere? Maybe on the outside where the wheel spins, in front of the brake shoe area? Just because it was taken out from an '85 Aero does not confirm it's from that scooter so is it possible it's from another year Aero or SE50? Case identification could quickly help someone before tearing into a motor. Or are all AF05's (SE05) the same?

on cmsnl they have the se50 and the 86-87 nb50 af05e crankshafts as being the same part. it also says the 85 nb50 af05e crank as being a 1 year only different part# crankshaft. I also searched the web for pics of the af29 engine and came up with it being the 2 bolt intake af05e. I have a few af05e engines. 86, 87 nb50, 87 se50, and 2 jdm af05e's. I have never had a 2 bolt intake af05e. I have compare all the cranks I have at 1 time or another during rebuilds. only thing I can say as to any differences between all of them other than the 87 se50 gear sets is the jdm engine parts have nicer finishes, their castings have less casting slag or splatter, the heads have a smaller combustion chamber and they got domed pistons as apposed to all of ours getting dished.
the jdm cranks and conn rods are even finished smoother and nicer than the US engines. it like they kept the pick of the litter and sold us the seconds.
other than the weird jdm early af16 with the big dio ports and the af05e offset exhaust port/flange (ive researched them a lot, but never physically had my hands on one) these engines were called both af05e in some parts of the world and af16 in other parts. these had af05e bore and strokes 41x37.4 but ive found conflicting info on bearings and such.
but all the af05e I have physically had, use the same bearings, have same length shafts and same diameter crank weights. same shaft diameters and spline counts. they can all be swapped between them, and I have swapped them between them. I have pics of the stuffy crank next to the one it replaced. ill dig them out and figure out if I can post them. its a pain to post pics here.

I found it on fleabay Italy ' if you search, search for honda vision, vision met-in, af29, Peugeot rapido, and crank in Italian is Albero. that's important too. af05e wont pull up sh+t. and make sure the oil pump gears are on the variator side. honda tried its hardest to confuse the world with model # and engine cofigurations. thanks Honda-san....

Hey guys, great info on the crankshaft.
I was considering a stroker kit for a 1987 aero 50, and increasing bore. Having trouble finding a stroker kit. Will another engine model kit drop in with mild case trim? Thanks, Mike

the short answer is no. at least nothing i have found. crankshafts for af05e are slim pickins to begin with. i searched high and low to find that stuffy crank in these pics. dio is bigger diameter in flywheels. ab07 is wider between nthe crank shafts. if you come across one, id be interested to know the info.
