Carb Interchangability

Post by Mxzx »

Hello, I just bought a cheap '86 Spree that hadn't been started for many, many years. Everything was gummed up, I cleaned the carb and it sorta runs. The bystarter valve is stuck, the auto petcock is stuck open, and when it sits not running fuel is leaking out of carb.

The carb needs a rebuild kit to include float and needle, but would I be better of getting a new carb with Bystarter already there?

I have found a replacement carb for a '84-85 Spree, part number 16100-GK8-673. Will that carb work on an '86?

I do have a replacement tank coming, along with petcock and filter.

One of the better acquainted gents will be along soon to answer this question.
Thanks for the accompanying diagnosis....most any carb can be rebuilt, but there are def times
it is better to replace. Good luck with it.

Yeah, by the time I buy the rebuild kit for $30 and an aftermarket valve for $10 I am over half of a new carb price of $70.

Aftermarket Spree carbs are garbage, avoid at all costs.

Ok, I found a used OEM carb from an '85. Will that work on an '86?

Thanks

Yes, but you'll need your 86 bystarter.

I actually found an '86 carb locally on Craigslist with a working Bystarter. Bike actually ran pretty well with it.
I am waiting for a functioning petcock, as mine is stuck open.
Is the needle and float strong enough to stop the fuel flow with the petcock stuck open?
The orignal carb would leak like crazy when machine shut off, and ran really rich.

Probably not, just rig a shutoff valve for it if you can't find one. I'd offer you one but I just gave my last one away last month.

I appreciate it, but I found a working one locally and it runs like a top now!
