Engine Noises, please help!!

Post by kkraft »

Hello, I am new to the board here. I am the owner of two 1987 Honda Sprees. I recently acquired the 2nd one which has been sitting for many years but only has 140 miles. I have taken nearly the whole thing apart and cleaned it up. Rebuilt the carburetor and cleaned the tanked and it fired right up on the first crank. It ran great with plenty of power but it had noisy crank bearings. I am guessing moisture or the homemade air filter contributed to that. I tore the engine apart and replaced the crank bearings and seals. The lower rod bearing and crank measured well within spec so I didn't touch them. I replaced the wrist pin and bearing just because they were cheap. I cleaned the piston because it had carbon on the sides and a partially stuck lower ring. Piston was within spec based on the lower measurement but the top of the piston is .010 smaller, does this sound right? That seems like a lot of taper. Compression is 125psi hot.
So now that it is assembled it has small tapping noise that is best heard with a stethoscope from the bottom of the engine. It doesn't do it for the first minute or so after starting but once it starts to warm up it is more noticeable but only at an idle. And at high rpms it has a high pitched tapping sound that matches the engine speed. Now it doesn't seem to want to start very well when cold and it is kind of sluggish. Any advice or opinions on what I did wrong or what is wrong is much appreciated! Thanks.

Both Sprees make this noise but this one is louder than my other.
