85 Spree Start issue then full throttle

I have an 85 Spree that if I put spray the air intake with fluid, will start right up.

But when it starts it is full throttle/RPM.. Gas is on full no matter what I do with the throttle. I screwed both carb adjustments to no effect. I backed out the bottom one 1.5 turns but neither have any effect on the go.

This is after I cleaned the carb and petcock and fuel tank.

I can't start without the spray..

So, looking for a list to go through as suggestions - one at a time..

Take the throttle slide out and re install it being careful to line up the slot in the slide with the small peg in the chamber (the slot is toward the back). If it's lined up correctly, the slide will go down properly. That should take care of it.

Yeah. Messed with that a bunch couldn't see the notch.
Took off the carb and was doing that on the bench.

Side note, the clip that goes on the pin notches broke. So I'm in a holding pattern until the pin , spring , etc gets replaced. Dont want to buy a whole new carb just for that.

So I used the cap spring and pin from my other spree. Ran about half throttle instead of full on

Throttle is def messed up. Thanks otto-man for sending the clip.

Greetings:

That throttle slide is a little fussy - to say the least - on insertion. It shouldn't take more than delicate Fingertip pressure to drop in, but sometimes we get over-eager. It's easy to get impatient and use force that will damage the soft aluminum slide bore in the carb, or bugger the little nub that lives in the groove of the slide. It's possible to bend the main jet needle too. Examine for such damage and perhaps you can Carefully smooth things with a judiciously-applied diamond file to remove overhanging metal, etc. Just make absolutely sure that the slide returns to Idle reliably EVERY TIME before going for a ride. Or memorize the location of the engine Stop switch blindfolded.

Oh it is seated properly now.

Just seems the throttle is open still. Not as bad as it was but still open.

If I use the throttle on the bars, it has no effect. And I can visually tell the throttle cable is moving down the slide instead of the spring loaded slide moving.

If the cable is moving through slide, The slide must be stuck.

Yes. Swapped carbs and the slide seated properly.

The throttle housing seems to move away from the carb cap connector.

So the throttle will stick "open" when the actual cable and housing is sliding out then stays there.

Could be a sticky cable and needs lube. Also cable could be kinked or routed in such a way that creates too sharp of a bend.

It seems that when the throttle is engaged the whole assembly slides up the cable housing.

I have a new carb with slide/cap/spring/pin coming so will swap out that part of the assembly.
