83 NH80 Stream Red - couldn't walk away

Post by breaze »

Good day everyone,
Haven't posted in a while - been outta the game with other projects and life keeping me busy. Ran across an 83 Aero NH80 with under 400 miles, mostly all there though it had been sitting in the weather for a while. Seemed like too much work but I am retired and what he was asking for it I actually had in my pockets - and I don't carry around much money...

So, got started on it and fairly pleased - it's not all there (missing parts later) but what is there is in good shape, especially the engine, carb, fuel tank and petcock which I always worry about. PO had obviously been keeping up with some things.

I've had 2 silver 83 NH80's and 1 blue 85 but it's been awhile so I got back on this site to read up. Think I'll try the 90 jet and Boyesen reeds but first things first - clean it up and get it running as is.

Also still see a lot of negatives and confusion around the choke on this bike - lots of hoses, an extra air filter, and a temp controlled valve mounted to the engine. Back in the day I think Bear and several others posted explanations of how it works but I thought I'd do it again since I have everything out for pics. Here is a pic of the hoses, carb, air filter, and valve as they should be configured. Next is a pic of how the valve works to my understanding.

The 2 gray hoses connect the air inputs from the valve and carb to the little air cleaner (you can pop it open and put some foam filter material inside - never seen one that didn't need a new element). One yellow hose connects the fuel out from the carb to the fuel in on the valve and the other yellow hose is the output from the valve which goes to the top nipple on the intake. As the valve heats up, the slide moves down offering a very fuel rich mix at first, slowly adding more air until it closes. Using the clearer hoses allows you to check and make sure everything is functioning properly - should see fuel rich mix flowing at first but once engine heats up, no flow. Once engine heats up, should be able to cap 2 nipples on carb and 1 nipple on intake and the engine should run the same.

Here is the list of parts missing, the floor rails were there but rusted out - everything else was just missing. It'll need tires, battery, plug, and filter element but I've already got those on the way.

Can't get both pics in one post so hopefully here is the pic of how the valve works:

You seem to just keep going MM - hope all is well. Electronic by-starters are for sissies  - gimme one of these - hoses are cheap.

I'll move over to the build section and post some pics - maybe someone will feel sorry for me and send me that left rear panel they have in the basement... I like the 80's and 125's - I'm hoping to cure the WOT shudder with reeds and 90 jet. Never got my 125 the way I wanted it - funny how everyone has a different experience.
