Help finding a Elite SB50 starter

Post by Noble »

Hey guys, I’ve been following this group for a little while, but first time posting. I have an elite (SB50) and the brushes are melted and burnt. I ordered a starter that came in and is for the other model. It spins the wrong direction to engage the gear. I have had no luck searching online for a starter. Does anyone have one they would part with, or know where to find one? The starter I need has 3 mounting bolts. The starter I have, has 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your starter MIGHT be fixable with new brushes.
User mousewheels just posted a starter motor tutorial for Gyro in the Technical section of this forum.

There may also be some additional info in the WikiSpreedia on here.

Well I took mousewheels suggestion on flipping my new starter 180, and some touch up work with the grinder. It worked perfect! Thanks much for the help. I now have 21$ into a nice little cruiser.

I'm curious where you got the starter and if you could give more details what you did. I have an sb50p and cannot find a starter. I have seen starters for a sa50 but haven't found much information on if they would work

I once had a SB50 starter, and none of the early SA50 starters or Sprees will serve as parts donors. However the 94-up SA50 starter I think is closer but shaft rotation direction and mounting plate differs.

Have you taken your SB50 starter apart? You can compare internals with this pic of the late model OEM SA50 starter. BTW I've never had an aftermarket 94-up starter taken apart - they may differ in internal components.
