1987 Honda Spree Electrical Brake Light

Post by palmreadings »

1987 Honda Spree 50cc, Black, Runs great.

Odd deal with the Brake light - All electrical good, except: when the brakes are depressed, instead of further illuminating the rear light, it cuts power to the light.

I've pulled the bike apart, checked the electrical diagram, and tested by attaching yellow/green and green at front and rear to an extra wiring harness i had. Plungers working fine, there is some effect as it turns the light off.

So my guess is the issue is electrical and somewhere either in the front or the back - maybe a missed/ corroded ground?

Any diagnoses out there? First post, Much appreciated.

William, Los Angeles.

Is the bulb dual element? If so, maybe the brake element is bad.

Install new #1157 bulb and check if that solves it.

Thank you bonesv and Cubey. That was also my next step for a Sunday. Of course it may be as simple as that..I've tried it with my friend's bulb with the same effect, however brand new bulb never hurt anyone. I'll update this afternoon

Have tried new bulb to no avail - also cleaned terminals.

a couple of notes - '86 not '87 (no license plate light)

If either brake is depressed while the bike is cranked, the tail light is interrupted, and will not illuminate, though i have had it come back on while riding in the past -still interrupted by depressing the brake however.

The tail light connection is tenuous at best - often times it will not come on.

I have checked the connections at both ends of the existing harness - no corrosion or frays.

Previously i replaced the front brake cable - i have checked the plungers on both front and rear and both are operational.

At this point it seems best to assume that the connection to both the brake and tail are compromised.

I am going to re-test with my spare wiring harness - if y'all have any ideas to avoid replacing the harness, i'd love to hear them. In the meantime i will test those connections on the new harness again.

Thank you for your time!
