Can't locate a R. Brake Cable for '86 NQ50

Post by jquast »

My Brother-in-Law has an '86 Aero50 (NQ50) in the garage he acquired by helping an elderly man move, 232 miles on the odom, looks great. I got it to run and used it as incentive for my 8 year-old nephew to learn to ride his bike, he's really gotten into dirt bike videos on youtube lately.

My BIL said he had trouble getting it running. No kidding: The air filter was shot--falling apart into tiny pieces, the spark plug completely gummed up, the carburetor dirty and tuned out of whack, the 7A fuse blown, the regulator bad (which caused the fuse to blow), flasher relay gone bad (probably by the bad regulator), starter didn't work (because of blown fuse), and the rear brake was seized completely shut.

I've fixed it all -- except the brake. It's the *cable* that is bad and seized shut. I've tried forcing oil into the sleeve for nearly a month and working it, hoping to unseize it, but it just won't budge, not 1 cm!

Meanwhile, I made an order for a replacement cable with https://www.hondaparts-direct.com/ -- nine days later Chuck e-mails me to say, "SORRY, the cable is no longer available and order canceled." -- Of course it is still listed available on the website.. you think they'll ever take it down? Probably not. Thanks for nothing, Chuck.

I can't find this cable for sale anywhere. It appears the NQ50 from 1986 rear brake cable is a unique cable for the year, different from 1985 and earlier, and 1987 and later, or other models of the year, not at all common. I can't find it for sale anywhere.

Any suggestions?! Is there somewhere that can make custom brake cables?

First off, the '86 Aero is an NB50 model, not an NQ50. Hope you have some luck with it now. There may be someone here with a used one also.
Welcome and be patient for replies......

Currently waiting for treatland.tv to re-stock the Urban Express rear cable. (I NEED)
Their website says : "..also fits Spree, (2 inches longer)"
One of the hazards of vintage bikes is unobtainable parts.
Patience will win the day.
and,...what ^^bonesv said.
Also,...in my 50+ years of bike cables, very seldom does a bad cable come back to life. Good luck sir...motor...:)

Greetings:

I've had a rear brake "jammed", but it wasn't the cable. The Cam in the brake hub is steel. The hub is aluminum. Those dissimilar metals will eat into each other so hard that they need at least a 5-pound (2Kg.) Persuader. Don't give up on the cable until you disconnect it from the rear brake lever and test THAT.
