85 Spree fuel sending unit (2 wire) on an 86 (3 wire)?

Post by nvc_wildcat »

Just bought an 86 Spree and realized the fuel level float is completely missing. There’s a couple 85 units on eBay, but these have two wires, whilst mine has three.

Is there any way I could use the 85 on the 86? Is there any way I could combine the two (take the float bit off the 85 unit and attach it to the 86)?

Thanks

Greetings:

I'm guessing nobody has ever done this. If the price isn't too high, you might just get the '85 sender and experiment.

I believe the 3rd wire is normally for the warning light which some scoots have.

Electrically, the 2 wire 85 fuel gauge and sender are a matched set. Same for the 3 wire 86-87. The changes between the early to late Sprees fuel gauge system is enough no mixed set indicates correctly. An 85 sender on your 3 wire system will read way low (I don't recall the exact amount maybe 1/4 to 1/3 full?) even when the tank is full.

It might, but there may be a less expensive alternative.

Do you need only the plastic float?
Or is your assembly missing both the float and actuating rod?
