Hey guys. 86 spree for my son. Get five kicks on the kick starter and it gets stuck. The lever does return then just gets stuck. It feels like the gear spins in to drive the face but dosent return.
I’ve dismantled the entire thing cleaned everything relubed everything all the teeth on the gear seem to be fine.. all working order.. very simple mechanism…. The thrust washer behind the main pulley is missing and the belt cover gasket is all torn up .. I know these things would affect the spacing inside there however it works all last season fine.. Anyideas? Thanks

Greetings:

Random Thoughts:
Bushings do get worn with time. If the wear allows the shaft to become "diagonal" in the bushing, lube may help but not for long. I'm not sure the parts could be found new, but perhaps someone has a cover assembly lying around? If not, try again with the thickest grease you can find. I've had a tube of Harley-Davidson "Special Purpose" grease for over 20 years for occasions just like this... Ask someone for the specs on that thrust washer and see if you can find/make one. Also, there's a Snap Ring that holds the kicker shaft in position. If its channel is worn, that could be your problem.

Greetings. I’ve tried to mimic that thrust washer but there not enough space after to get the face over the splines on the crank..I actually just found the thrust washer available from Honda still. Maybe I’ll grab one.that snap ring and the grove your referring to is slightly worn. Maybe I’ll try to replace this ring. Thanks

Hey. I replaced the thrust washer and the snap ring . Still same as before.. and I try electric start with the same problem. So that would rule out bad kicker.. the crank is straight and the drive face teeth for the electric and kickstart are not worn. I’m clueless at this point

Find a cover gasket for your cover and apply it with some adhesive sealant to the cover and let dry completely. Then when it’s dry, install it to the case with a light coating of heavy grease so gasket will stay on cover and will not “stick” to the case. The extra spacing should give the gear more room and lessen the binding (stuck-ness). Hope this helps!

This seems like some very solid advice.

I realize thickness is the issue at hand, so after my cereal box comment, I went to find the right gasket. I've included an Ebay seller that is reliable and a long-time forum member known as "tazland", but his Ebay name is chopchop123.
