New to mopeds, just bought an 87 spree with af16 swap.

Hello everyone thanks for checking this out. I picked up this bike and am curious about a couple things. Firstly, do any electrical parts work when the engine is not running? Nothing happens when I turn the key. No lights, horn, and the electric start does nothing as well. After I kick start it the lights work, they seem to glow brighter when I accelerate also. The electric start makes a faint whine if I press it when it’s already running. Also the blinkers only blink once when I turn them on and then nothing else. Any thoughts there?
This bike was done by two owners before me and I really don’t know exactly what parts are in it other than the af16. Cool looking ride though.

DON'T push the starter button when running. WHY would you do that ?
As for the lights, will not work with ONLY the key on. MUST be running for lights to work.
Of course, with someone having changed so much on the bike, who knows how it is wired now?

The battery is dead is why nothing works until the motor is running and you need to just dive in and learn. Ask your questions here but try to keep ‘em in this thread instead of starting a new one for every question. Replacement battery size is YTX4L-BS OR PM4L-BS punch in numbers on eBay and I buy em for like $18 each shipped. Expect between 1 and 2 years max life then replace.

If blinkers only blink once while it’s running, sounds like it needs a new battery. Try turning the blinker on and accelerating and see if it blinks more, if that’s the case then it’s a battery. The headlight doesn’t come on when the engine isn’t running, horn could also be part of dead battery.
