Engine will not shut off once keys removed from ignition!

Post by ManicGTI »

Firstly, hi all, first post!

1986 Vision NE 50 MF, Not a spree i'm afraid, but I believe it's pretty much identical!

It hasn't been run in 6 years so I cleaned the carb, tank out etc and have got it started, but when I turn it off and remove the key it keeps on running for a minute or so and eventually dies!

I have added an inline filter sitting vertically in the fuel line from tank to carb as I found some debris in tank when I cleaned it out. Could it be residual fuel in this that is keeping it going?

Unless the cylinder is really car boned up, I suspect your ignition switch is bad or shorted.
Pull the switch off and check with a multi-meter.

Thanks, i'll check the ignition switch.

Would a carboned up piston cause the same problem then?

I'm a car man normally, 2 strokes are new to me

Yea, hot spots created by the carbon build up can fire unburnt fuel.
If the swich checks out OK, then pull the head and look for carbon deposits.

update...When I pull a spade off the coil, it does die out.

Assume this implies ignition problem?

Yes, you just eliminated the spark.
Your switch is stuck in the on position.
Probably you will have to change it out.
