Also, if your piston is an extremely tight fit in the cylinder w/o the rings check the following:

#1 Put both rings in their right slot and compress them into their track as much as possible, if they don't sit flush then take the ring(s) that don't fit flush and put them flat on really really fine sand paper and sand off a bit at a time until the rings sit flush.

#2 Then, once the rings sit fine, make sure that the cylinder is being put STRAINGHT on, one slight tilt to the cylinder will not allow it to go on.

I had the same problem you have, only I didn't break a ring. I took the same steps as stated above and got my piston in just fine, tight, but fine.
