what other type of chemicals can i use?

i saw this and i was wondering what other type of chemicals would work just as well?

Lye is hard to beat for this application. Acids will eat the metal. Solvents might do it but anything that would eat the carbon would be pretty nasty. Some of the spray oven cleaners contain lye.

I know the easy-off has lye in it and the liquid plumber might also. Lye is a common drain cleaner.
