Spree starter motor compression

Post by roadcapDen »

UpDate,
84 no kicker.
Starter motor will only turn it over 1/2 to 1 revolution, not enough to start.
If I loosen the spark plug it will keep turning over OK.
Have tried new batteries and hooked up to a chrger, rebuilt starter relay, new bendix/pinion and starter runs fast off of the bike and was checked by a professional. Amps draw should be?
The bike starts up just fine useing an electric drill.

Any other ideas guys??

Thanks, Den in Toronto

Spec according to service manual. I bet its half burned up.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

You mean the starter motor Kenny.
Can you provide the spec please?
Do they still sell new ones?
Thanks for the reply!

Odd. You've checked all the stuff you should have. Bendix is usually the culprit after a weak battery.

Have you pulled the back off the motor to check the brushes and rear bearing surface?

Hey Noiseguy, yes I've had the motor apart and everything looks/smells good, lots of wear still left on the brushes, turne freely, bike only has 2,000 km on it, even had an alternator shop look at it.

Guess I'll drill a hole in the side cover so I can start the bike with an electric drill or a socket?

Couldn't find the spec's for the starter motor in the manual, anybody know what the amp draw should be?

Anybody have a good starter motor for sale?

Thanks

One thing you might try: Get ahold of Greg at uspmale@yahoo.com

He has those parts, and may be able to test what you have. My guess is that it's bendix or motor related IF you've already ruled out the battery.

Any chance the compression is too high (over 120 PSI?) This happens sometimes when the head/jug gets carboned up, but is unusual.

Thanks, I got the relay and bendix from Greg, oh, and a bystarter too.

Piston and head are clean as is muffler.

Tried 3 new batteries with and without charger on them, bendix from Greg looks exactly like my old one.???

Check for loose, dirty or corroded connections from the battery to he starter. That includes the starter solenoid and the ground wires. If those are all good check the voltage at the battery when cranking, should stay above 10.5 volts, if not the battery is NG.

Dielectric grease is an insulator, not a conductor. So I hope you do not have it all over your connections.

I noticed the + brass male connection on the motor wiggles a bit from side to side, is that normal or not?
