this year it runs different

Post by swf »

Hello everyone,

Had the 86 spree running good last summer, not so good this summer. This year I cant get it to match its 27 mph speed of last summer it peaks at 25 mph. The exhaust color seems normal after its warmed up. I've also adjusted the air screw. No luck. Its been bogging down when I get it up to top speed. Last summer I pulled apart the carb cleaned it thoroughly, bought a new air cleaner and air filter, and replaced the choke. The gas was drained and it was stored in a warm basement for the winter.

I'm stumped. Could the carb need to be cleaned again? Any one have any ideas?

thanks,
SWF

howbout carbon buildup in the muffler? you can heat it up to decarbonize it, but i prefer just taking it off and shaking and hitting it vigorously, lol. that tends to loosen up some of the gunk.
projects galore :nerd:

Hey SWF, welcome back.

I'm guessing that your carb needs recleaned. Are you running fresh gas, or it is a year old? Bogging is typical of running too lean.

Hello Noiseguy,

Hope all is well. I'm going to re-clean the carb today. I have put fresh gas into it but that didn't seem to help. Actually I'm really hoping after the carb is cleaned that will solve the problem. Cross your fingers. I'll give an update soon.

thanks!

By the way, to answer a really old question you'd asked; the Aero 80 rear shock/spring is rumoured to bolt up to the Spree. This will keep it from bottoming out for more agressive riders. I see these on Ebay every once in awhile.

Ok I did the carb clean. It was better for a while then it slowly whent back to the same. 25 top speed and bogging. I noticed a good amount of oil in the carb plus on the spark plug. So I'm guessing this is the problem since it seemed to have run good for a while after I flushed out the carb.

Is their a way to adjust the amount of oil that mixes with the gas?

Is this the kind of problem that means my little spree is doomed?

Hey noiseguy thanks for the tip on the shock. If I get this thing running good again I'll look into it.

Also I read on the forum that it might be a BY Starter problem. I believe that this has to do with the choke, maybe?

I just bought a new choke last year and things were much better. This year too much oil, maybe?

I don't believe there is any way to adjust the oil flow. I think the oil pump just does the correct amount if it is working properly. If I am wrong someone out there chime in and let us know how to do it.

I wonder if the bottom end hasn't filled up with oil over the storage, due to a slow leak in the oil pump. Thus the engine is fouling plugs, and will until it burns off.

Either that or your rusty tank is filling the carb bowl with crud and plugging the idle jet.

BTW, you are using injector oil, and not a premix oil, correct?

Hello Noiseguy,

I checked the idle jet when cleaning the carb. I'll pull the carb apart again and clean it.

I'm not sure about the oil. I've just been buying 2 cycle oil for motorcycles, etc...

I'll make sure to purchase injector oil from now on.

thanks agin

they sell something to put in that tank and it seals it and covers the rust.

Yes, Kreem or POR15 Tank Kit. Problem is that then flakes of the sealer come off and plug your idle jet and filter, instead of the rust. I had good luck with acid cleaning mine, and it's cheap ($5 and 2 hours of shake and wait.)
