Low test is fine (87,) but since you only need 1/2 gallon, you could run premium. The only thing it will hurt is your wallet, and it's extra protection against detonation. I run premium in all my small engines, from the lawn mower to my CB900F. Only the car gets regular octane.
Sounds like your scoot is 4-cycling, firing every other stroke, and I can't remember what causes that.... Jerry?

Low test (87) is just fine. No real reason for mid or high grade.
Backfiring can be caused by carbon buildup (usual cause) or fouling plug. Hot spots are igniting the fuel without the spark plug electrode firing. Sounds like it's time to de-carbon the engine. Check the plug first with a new one of the correct heat range. Extended high speed driving should have a cooler running plug.
