pressure testing motor
Thought this might make a good sticky. Im going to do this before installing my motot. I dont want to waste hours, days ,weeks trying to tune around an air leak. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySu2NC1X7s4
Re: pressure testing motor
Good video, thanks for the link. A good idea for piece of mind while tuning. I will be doing this as well.

Re: pressure testing motor
Pressure test is a good idea. I posted a similar link, and the guys suggested testing with vacuum too, since the seal must function +/- pressures. Thanks - will make a Wiki page for the tests.

Re: pressure testing motor
If you are gonna bother pressure testing, then vacuum testing only makes sense as the engine cycles from vacuum to pressure and back again to vacuum. We used to pressure and vacuum test gearcases on marine engines, and I've seen plenty that were good for pressure and bad for the vacuum or vice-a-verse-a.mousewheels wrote:Pressure test is a good idea. Re: pressure testing motor
Thanks Bear, as stated in the other thread we will have a complete test here It does not take much extra work or hardware to run both.If you are gonna bother pressure testing, then vacuum testing only makes sense as the engine cycles from vacuum to pressure and back again to vacuum. Re: pressure testing motor
All you need additional is a vacuum pump.mousewheels wrote:Thanks Bear, as stated in the other thread we will have a complete test here It does not take much extra work or hardware to run both.If you are gonna bother pressure testing, then vacuum testing only makes sense as the engine cycles from vacuum to pressure and back again to vacuum. Re: pressure testing motor
I made my pressure tester today for $15 total. I used an air/gas pressure test gauge, 3/4 inch nipple, plastic adapter, and 1 inch boat drain plug for the exhaust port.
This setup fits the ct manifold and the boat drain plug fits big bore cylinder (not sure about stock).

Re: pressure testing motor
I forgot to mention that you apply pressure using a bike pump or other source.

Re: pressure testing motor
Yeah, any pressure over about 15 PSI will just blow the seals for you. Don't be using an air compressor.

Re: pressure testing motor
Have you tried it yet? I had alot of leaks at the ct manifold. i had to take it off and and put high temp silicone on the gaskets and really torq it down. I still cant get pressure to hold due to a leaky schrader valve. Also i have the tiniest of leaks around the bolts on the ct manifold very tiny soap bubbles that accumulate over time. i dont dare to tighten it anymore. im feeling pretty confident though knowing that i fixed a bunch of leaks and my case halves and crank seals arent leaking a bit. Let me know how it works for you.
Re: pressure testing motor
So silicone the manifold bolts when you install them. Then the leaks will be gone without over torquing the bolts, which is a no-no with steel bolts into an aluminum case.losthope wrote:Have you tried it yet? Re: pressure testing motor
I just tried it tonight. Worked great, only thing is the boat drain plug wanted to pop out of exhaust port. I secured it and pressure test went good. No leaks anywhere.

Re: pressure testing motor
Visited Harbor Freight this morning looking for trailer accessories and saw this for those interested in vacuum testing their motor. Cheap at $24.99.

Gotta love Harbor Frieght... my favorite Taco place is right around the corner so it is even AWESOMER, even if it is 40min away!
Re: pressure testing motor
How would you perform the vacuum test? I got one of the vacuum deals from HF and will be setting it up.
