Help find a quieter exhaust

Post by stopsign31 »

Installed a Taz 50mm BBK and gear set into an old '94 Elite SR. My neighbor is like a surgeon with the welding torch, so he cut open the stock muffler and removed ALL of the internal baffles. Scooter runs 50+ easily, but sounds like a small airplane and attracts too much attention ( not the good kind!). I'd like some advise on a good aftermarket pipe which will not sacrifice performance, but doesn't cause birds to fall out of their nests when I ride by. Anybody have one they would like to sell or trade? I have a spare '94 Elite frame / engine that I am parting out. Thanks.

The exhaust does NOT have to be loud to work well. In Europe they have a number of quiet and efficient exhaust systems.. To bad most Americans believe that loud is fast. Rather than strip all the baffling, you should have removed the small pipes thru the baffles and installed larger ones. Noise stays down while air flow increases.

Stick an outlet pipe into the middle of fat part of the pipe rather than the end. The pressure is highest at the ends and lowest at the fat parts. Pressure equals noise.

On my expansion chamber I extended the stinger to the fattest part and was rewarded with a much milder sound and little if any difference in performance. Keithw made a good exhaust with such a pipe. Jennings talks about it his book. they both did it before I did.

What gears did you use?

The v8 pipe from yms is not too loud and works well with th 50mm kit.

Sorry, off the top of my head I don't recall which gear set Taz sent with the kit. This was his stage 2 kit from E-bay. Do you have an extra V8 YMS pipe for sale? If not, where is the best place to get one? Thanks a lot for the help.

The x-tra in the picture is mine!!

And I love the pipe, not too loud and a nice tone.
Also are you running the stock airbox? That is key for a quiet scooter.
I took my airbox off and went with a uni and its easily twice as loud at wot.

I also installed a UNI air filter per Taz recommendation. Will the V8 exhaust still be "quiet" with the UNI filter?

Intake noise is the opposite of the exhaust and will not effect the exhaust noise. That is the air entering the engine thru the carb venturi, is noisy. However the intake noise can be louder than the exhaust, especially with a 2 stroke.

Yup, my stock exhausted motor only gets loud based on throttle position. All you can hear is the carb.

Me too!
but on a ministroker crank.
and a 30mm carb

Mine goes 62 mph with 8.4's

50 mph in the 1/8th mile in 13 sec!

It is NOT Quiet. The UNI will do little to quiet it down.

No, there is no obvious or detrimental noise near the carb intake (maybe the obnoxious exhaust is masking it!!). I live out in the country so the break in period for the BBK has not been a big issue with the loud muffler. I would like to be able to take the scooter into town occasionally, but fear I'll get ticketed with the current exhaust. I recently saw on the Jiangwayne site an aftermarket exhaust for $89 which looks good (some chrome on the heat shield). Anybody have comments on this part, or any other suggestions?
