Im wondering- is this the ncy "golden" variator for ruckus? Cuz that bad boy is like 111mm wide or something. And I don't think 1man would have to hard a time opening up the case a little for that extra 5%-10% of variator diameter.

The rabbit hole goes much deeper. Im running a Stage6 clutch adjusted with a launch of about 4k. I know with the 7.82 gears installed its going to be a dog from 0-10. Its the top end Im focused on at the moment. 7,300 rpms is all she'll push.

Still waiting for Wheelman or 1man to comment on their speed/rpm claims and explain.

Have you checked your squish? What's your compression? Plug chops? I've heard guys say they gotta take off at 6-8 for those tall gears, but I've never had em so I can't speak on that. But you should be going over 7300rpm unless something is up w your tune

Greetings:

The 05s I had would spin a good bit faster than 7300 even in Stock form. Closer to 8K actually. Once you go with the big block, the power down at 7-8 is really soft, necessitating a very light roller load and stronger Contra spring. That Contra is really important with taller gears, because the belt held in stock tension will spin away half your power.

I'd have to dig up my posts from late 2008 to review Flash 1 and 2, but I seem to recall really light gram loads - like under 30 - and a very high clutch engagement to gain some semblance of traffic compatibility off the line. However the Polini and Malossi big-blocks paired with the LV #4447 pipe never broke 10K as far as I can recall. Speeds likely topped 60, a little, but best GPS I can prove was in the 59MPH range at 9800 or so. My gears were also 2:1 Malossi primaries for 7.83:1 and a 90/90 rear tire.

Because of the off-the-line issues, it wasn't a very practical around-town bike. You worried turning left across oncoming traffic, for example, because it took so long to get across.

Ive got the Malossi yellow spring in there, as well as the 7.82 gears. Polini vari and belt also. Stage6 clutch set to engage at 4k.

I dropped my roller weight to 5.5g and it almost seems like I need a bit lighter. I have it running on the stand with the belt cover off and started it with a drill...just to see whats happening with my eyes. I hold onto the clutch bell and slowly give it throttle while watching the tach. It begins to grab at 3800 and rips it out of my hand at about 4100 or so.

Watching the vari, it begins to "variate" at about 4500-ish. Maybe lighter rollers would get it to hold off to an optimal 5k-6k before shifting? How much RPM difference should I be looking for between clutch engagement and variator shifting?

On the stand with 5.5g rollers, its able to spin upwards of 10k rpms and the vari is fully extended at around 8500.

Question: lighter rollers would make the vari fully engage HIGHER than 8500, therefore not able to maximize my top speed potential unless I can get the motor spin that fast while riding. I know riding it (for real) is much different than revving it on the stand.

I remember meloshameless making the comment once that his af05 build only really liked the Polini "white" spring which is a mere 7% stronger than stock. Maybe my 30% malossi Yellow is too stiff?

Read the post above yours. The answers are there.

On the stand there's no weight on the bike so the trans acts and shifts differently.

Wheelmans experience w your setup is 8k engagement works best. You have 4k engagement.

And 5.5g x 6 is more than 30. I'd go less weight.

Greetings:

Yeah, 4k for clutch engagement seems very very low to me. I don't know about 8K but maybe 5 or 5500 or 6K. You are right that it's important that the variator doesn't try to "variate" before the clutch is fully engaged. However it shouldn't move much if any before 6500 or 7500. That's why I agree with Benji that your weights need to go down and/or the spring needs to be stiffer. I suspect the reason you're not seeing RPM is that the engine is strangled way below its power zone the whole time. Try a 27 gram load. If the engine screams too high without power, add back 2 or 3 grams and test again. If it's better than what you have now, drop another 3 grams. With these things, 2 or 3 grams is often the difference between "In Tune" and Sucking.

OK, 27gram (4.5g) installed. Clutch adjusted to engage at 5k-ish. Testing is done for the day due to weather and other obligations. Will report back with results as time permits. Thx.

That's the other thing- me n meatball are in seattle winter, which means weather and air variances like crazy. 2 weeks ago it snowed like crazy, last week it was in the 50's n kinda dry n sunny, now it's rainy and in the 40's. The tune is gonna be a little off cuz of the weather. My bike will run different DURING THE SAME RIDE this time of year just cuz of the air filter getting more/less wet, sunny or shady conditions, etc.

Meatball, just buy an aero 80 or 125 haha. It really what you want, they'll do like 45-55 all day.

That's the thing. I know me too well. If I went and got a Motorcycle Endorsement I'd end up with a Ducati or CanAm.

Agter hours of tuning my afo5 and malossi kit, intake, Polini 21 cp, and full trans set up(stock pipe/gears) i was doing 50 on flats. One thing i noticed is the ports on the bottom of the cylinder jug were smaller those on the cases, restricting air flow. This i noticed by the imprint it made on the base gasket. So i took a dremel to the cylinder jug and carved that out. It made quite the difference on 0-top speed but didnt effect the top speed.
