??? the countershaft gear in green?

The green gears are a set what ratio? stock ones? How would that work?

Option #1
Buy aftermarket primary gears (A and B)
Find yourself a stock AF16E (C) gear
And use your stock (H and G) gears
Image

Option #2
Buy aftemarket Secondary gears (C and D)
Find yourself a stock AF16E (B and E) gear and shaft
I am pretty sure gear/shaft (A) is the same in a AF16E as in a AF05E, but if it is not you will need to find one of those too.

Gear (F) never gets used in any of these swaps and is very sad

Greetings:

Read Jamz's write-up carefully. It' very good. This is just to advise on your target ratio setup. Note that I have not personally confirmed fitment to an AF05 with its 2-bearing cover, but I trust those who have.

Stock AF05E ratio ('85--87 Aero and up to '93 Elite) is 11.097:1. Decent take-off but runs out of legs quickly. WILL over-rev your shiny new Polini. The exception is the '87 Elite - Non-restricted - that sports ~10:1. Still too short for Prodigious Polini Power, but with a very large (3.50, needing clearance) rear tire and discretion on downhills, you could get away with them. However a bit hard to find.

Stock AF16E ratio is ~12:1. Better take-off but even shorter overall. Do not exceed 45MPH with them. See above.

The Malossi primaries are increasingly hard to find, gathering dust on the top shelves of a few remaining Euro shops. The good news is that you don't need to find all the AF16 parts (below), but the bad news is you're limited to their 7.83:1 ratio. Malossi Part Number 67-6458. If you do get those, you will notice a distinct sluggishness pulling away from stops, but once @ 10MPH they're fine. Top speed can reach 60 on the GPS with a strong engine, personally verified on Flash II.

However I would recommend the 9:1 secondaries for AF16. They're just a tad short, but the Polini can handle occasional higher-RPM operation. Much more satisfying take-off and still capable of 55MPH. The Aftermarket Kits come with a new countershaft and the big gear that presses onto the axle. To install, you'll need the AF16 clutch shaft ("A"), the "B" gear, and Axle shaft ("E"), which MUST be the "early" version from a '94-early '98 Elite. They make 8.4:1s but I'm not sure they'll go any faster with 65cc Polini and they sure are a bit pokier off the line.

Good luck!

I had the colors backwards(I can't remember a color for five seconds I guess), but the part names are right. edited original post for accuracy.

Also, the af05 primary cannot be used with af16 gears. Neither the 12t or the 13t will fit without binding the countershaft gear.

Buy aftemarket Secondary gears (C and D)

Indeed, coming from the netherlands of course.

So my final setup will be my signature plus the gears and the Uni filter that just came in. I have to decide whether or not to drill out the exhaust when it gets here. Any thoughts? I was going to still run the oil pump and do a light premix, but the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards a full premix. Too many thoughts for 4 weeks into this lol.

Any updates???
Also, I have a semi-related question. Will the SE50 10:1 gears fit directly into an 85 aero af05e case? Is it as easy as just swapping out the driveshaft and countershaft gear? Thanks!

The Molassi gear set is from Italy. More sluggish off the line because of the taller ratio. They require bbk power and torque. The top speed is higher than it would be with an af16 9.2:1 gear set swap. Fitment is perfect, no grinding required for the molassi primaries like there is on an af16 set swap.
