variator testing, honda aero

Post by fightingplankton »

so, here's how things went down.

set-up: '86 honda aero w/ all body panels removed
1.stock variator w/ grease removed.
2.KN variator w/ stock roller weights.
3.Aero80 variator w/ aero80 weights.
all runs done on same stretch of road using Cantrell motor sport app for iphone(free download http://www.cantrellmotorsport.com/cmsLa ... index.html)to record top speed and constant variable speeds.

we were interested in 2 primary tests; top speed & hill climb.

results as follows.

test 1. 49mph top speed(down hill), 36-38 flat ground, decline from 30mph to 26mph uphill(steep hill, not sure of grade)
test 2. 50mph top speed, 38mph flats, uphill decline from 30 to 27mph.
test 3. couldn't test because the aero80 vari doesn't fit in the aero50 case(same problem w/ ruckus variator)

in summary, as far as the aero50 is concerned...there is no appreciable difference between stock and KN variator. definately not worth $47 in my honest opinion. I'm sure it would work well on a different bike at accelerating take off, but the aero50's is almost identical in performance.

Without fine tuning each vari with different roller weights,
you're not seeing the gains which you could see.
Going at the test with the same weights
in each vari is not a test which tells you much.
Every vari will act different and some need
lighter rollers than others depending on
engine mods.
