Well, maybe we can run through this together. I have 4-Aero (or 87' Elite S) variators/ramps that I can try to adapt. I also have a machine shop so I can make modifications as necessary. I really like the look of the old one so if I could get upper 30's out of it I would be happy with that as I have a TON of 35mph roads near me, not looking for a barn burner bike here.... My 85' went from about ~36/7 to ~41/42mph with nothing but a $40 variator.

Besides, my Sprees run upper 30's now, that would just be embarrassing ;)

I also have a bare Kelli Variator (no ramp or weights) that is brand new. I wonder if that, along with a Aero/Elite S ramp would work. We should be able to figure that out pretty easy, just need to know the diameter of the shaft and the stock pulley.

Actually I have a 13T Driveshaft out of an 87' Elite S, I wonder how different the trans is....I'll look some stuff up, I also wonder if I could swap in the entire gear set.....that would drop the drive ratio to 10.2 and should net a 3-4mph increase. Also, installing a larger rear tire should help......I think it's doable, one way or the other. As long as it has the power to pull it.

Brivander,
I don't want to get your hopes up.. my interest in this is fairly low.. I'm in the midst of getting three bikes ready for the Tampa Tangle Moped Army meet this coming weekend in Tampa. When I get back from that, I'll fix whatever broke during that weekend. After that, about all I plan to do with the Aero's is to remove one of the variator back plates and grease, put in new rollers, test ride it, and if there is meaningful improvement in top speed, with no big downside, then I'll do the same thing on the other one.. That is about as much as I am interested in changing things. I'm not interested in gear changes, clutch or variator experimentation and tuning, porting, or working on more top speed. I'll be interested in your results though.

Thats fair, I can't ride a scooter that slow anymore, but I'm not looking for a speed demon either.

I'll figure out what needs to be done and do it. I'll post up results.

I'f I'm buying a scooter that old, I always break it down first and change things like fuel lines, fluids, air filter, variator rollers, belt, clutches etc. since it seems like 90% of the time it's never been done before.

check my thread on the outer sheave mods. theres a wealth of info on the trans mods ive successfully made. id almost bet my blue 84 aero is one of the fastest AB07 on the board, past or present. partly due to the big bore i installed. the af01 lead engine has the same bore stroke 40x39.3. different port shapes though. i had to modify my cases to make it work. i built it over a year ago and its been a very dependable, fast scooter. not like my orange and white 84 aero with the af05e swap..... that b**** named Debbie. she always * me off! lol
express cylinders have correct port shapes to the ab07 but the nc50 express has a longer con rod than the ab07. if i remember correctly cylinder heights are off by 4 or 5mm b between the express and first gen aero
