AF05 44mm bbk issues

Post by ZMUD »

My friend has a 1990 elite sa50/af05 that we installed one of taz's 44mm bbk on and were having issues. The engine starts up great and gets going to 20 really nice then it dogs all the way to 35. The kit comes with a 100jet and we jetted down to a 90 and found that it was better but not good enough. We did a compression test and we had 120psi with one head gasket and a 0.6 squish band. Then we changed the weights in the vari. and better but not good enough. The bike with the stock cyl would get to the middle of the fuel gauge with no problem! I installed the bbk the same way i've built the last ten scooters and this one is a p.i.a! The build was not to achieve top end but a little more out of the hole and midrange due to the fact of NO GEARS/stock!!...HELP

The plug is a dark brown/blackish. were running uni-filter up-4112 and the trans is stock due to the 1990 no gears available trans! No matter what jet I run 85-100 it changes the way it runs but the plug chop never does. Thats what has me screwed up!I want to see a lean or rich plug so I can dial that in.We did put a oko vari and ramp plate from VT on there before the bbk and was able to get to the F on the fuel gauge. So we changed the weight all around up and down and either the motor revs out to high or it slows down and takes forever to get up top speed. I undestand its not geared but with the stock cyl. it moved and now this thing is a turd! And the bad thing is the scooter is flawless some lady won it on the price is right and it sat in a basement for 15yrs with .9mi on it and it only has 200 on it now and I feel as if we did no justice to this scoot!

Greetings:

ZMUD, mired in frustration, taps:

I wonder if you "overshot" the ideal variator load by making 6-gram jumps each time. Baka-san taught me that 2-3 grams can make a big difference. Perhaps the same effect can be seen with too large a change in carb jets? I think a BBK calls for 88-ish with stock appendages.

If the performance difference occurred after the BBK install, consider a faulty seal somewhere. Base Gasket, exhaust, head gasket leaks? One symptom of this is an engine that's nigh-impossible to tune.
