Spree upgrade idea

Post by spartan-spree »

My spree is all stock besides some knobby tires I added during winter and decided to keep it on cause it looks bad-* :) well heres my problem. Im tired of cheap, horribly built chinesse scooters passing me on campus. So I'm a very mechanical guy and fixed up a few sprees and sold to my friends but want to know how to upgrade my spree to get it to 35-40 mph. I want to know what's the best bang for the buck upgrade.

Spree upgrade idea

Best bang for buck would be to swap in a new engine that allows for more performance upgrades, such as the variated af05e off of 87-93 elites (excluding 88 & 89 sb50p) or the more desirable (and more expensive) route of the af16e engine, which offers the widest range of AM parts making the possibilities practically endless. The variated af05e will run you about $175-230 stock and the af16 usually between $275-350ish depending on what it has in it. The af05 will allow you to achieve a solid 50-55mph with some reports of nearly 60mph but probably about 35-38mph while stock. The af16 (unrestricted) can reach 37-41mph stock and when modded, has been known to go scary fast for a scoot this size (75+mph)

the sa50 with mild mods will reach will reach speeds of 42-48. some reported speeds of 50mph from mild mods. heavy mods will garner 60+

It also depends on which sa50. If it is a 94-01 (af16e) there will be more options and more speed, If it is the 88-93 (variated af05e) it will be on a lesser scale but still very tunable and able to beat your Chinese foes.

Three things I have never done, Dell computers, Chinese bearings and being Politically Correct.

I hate to break the sad news, but it's way cheaper to sell your Spree and buy something with better fundamentals. The Spree doesn't have a modern CVT transmision like almost every other scooter on the planet. Some Sprees don't even have a kick-start. Like a car with a one-speed transmission, the Spree will always be a dog. Lots of people like Sprees for good reasons, but speed isn't one of the good reasons. Here's the ONLY reasons to own a Spree:
1. They're light, only about 80lbs, so you can pick up a Spree and take it with you in your car.
2. Sprees don't have a fuel pump.
3. Sprees are light, so you can carry one into your bedroom if you're lonely. Oh, I said that already.

I would if you'd shown a photo. But I'll bet it's not a Spree. If you changed the engine/trans, it's no longer a Spree for the purpose of this topic. It's a Spree with a Briggs & Stratton, or whatever. So let's see the photo so we can all have a kick at it :-)
