AF16E not quite right

Post by TikiMan »

Hello,
My 87se is only topping out around 48mph about 2 weeks ago I had a run at 52mph. what would cause a change in 4mph and is there a way to get me cruising a little bit faster.

Im running a 2001 AF16E with a malossi 72cc cast iron kit, intake and 24mm oko carb 135main 52 pilot. Pg short pipe(switching to long once it arrives) and a polini rukus vari with 7 and 8 gram weights with a 9.44 rear end. Its running amazing and I don't have many complaints with the 500 miles I've on it since break in.

mark the variator face with a sharpie and see how high the belt is going. does the engine rpm drop some as your getting into topend speed?

weather change ill make the bike run different too. air temp, humdity berometric pressure, that all will effect how a 2 stroke motor runs. these motors are sensitive to changes

I feel like that is not a great top speed. Try a tach and see what your powerband looks like. Phongeer might like more revs. Try to check your tire pressure could be the issue

So yesterday i did some runs with different weights to see what eould happen. Nomatter what weihts i installed it would not go over 49mph. Im starting to lean towards changing the gears. I believe 8.44 would be a first good try and maywbr something lower just incase. Any ideas?

does your carb have a hose that goes from the bowl to the top of the mouth of the carb? plus the jets your using is more for a 28mm carb so you might over jetted too. at wot it will 4 stroke and cause the bike to not rev up as high as it should.

Sounds like a problem solver. 9.44 is a ratio I would use on a stock bore. 8.44 to 9.0 would be a better set for breaking 50mph and keeping quicker acceleration.

it can faser than that with the parts he is using. with a stock exhaust yeah 50-55mph can be done with those gears. he is using a pg short and even if a pg long was being used, they both rev into the 10300rpm range which should get past 49mph for sure. sounds more like a carb issue going on thats holding him back or possible leak somewhere thats having him jet so big for that size carb.

if its a oko 24mm carb it will say right there on the side 24mm stamped on it. check the exhaust for leak under the flange. thats a common place for the pg pipes to leak.also check the vacuum hose to the mani and the nipple for the vacuum hose. if the hose is not really snugg,it will suck air in. the nipple on the ct manis are prone to leak too. I jb weld those nipples in. those jets are really big if your carb is a 24mm carb.
