Epic Variator Fail! Carnage pictures and advice...

Post by JustynCRX »

So the other day my ramp plate decided it no longer wanted to sit in its assigned seat and went for a ride into my engine case grinding off a bunch of metal and part of the seal. Not satisfied with taking its own life it also felt it necessary to take with it my brand new polini weights. Needless to say this engine is toast. I had to take my stock AF05E off my Naked scooter project and swap EVERYTHING from the busted engine to the stock engine. Now I have an engine-less naked scooter (SE50) My Daily driver (SE50), a SA50 coming tomorrow (AF05E :( ) And my Puch maxi project (not related). My question for you all is, what should I do engine wise? Get an AF16 for the naked scooter? Swap the engine from the SA50 to the naked and get the AF16 for that? Or something else?

You need to measure the boss and ramp plates diameter always before installing. The ramp plate was too big in diameter and it allowed it to flop around side to side, which eventually caught a corner.

87-93 ramp plate has small hole and boss both are 12mm driven plate is not strong hold the crank 87.

dio has 14mm ramp plate and 14mm s boss. ..

better off get a s block has has stronger tooth on crankshaft and beefer driven drive face plate.

the daytona grams weights last longer ans smooth shifts..

I bought the variator for the af05 it somehow ground the hole bigger.

Back to the issue though. What do I do about engine decisions?

The engine definitely didn't seize. It was idling when it went.

Is your AF16 modified?
How fast do you need to go with your route on the daily driver?
How often will you ride your naked bike project? How fast do you need this to go?

If you feel that the AF16 is just as easy to install, then that route has my vote, since I have the AF16 on my daily driver (1989 Honda Elite E).

I don't have an af16 I'm thinking about getting one. The naked scooter isn't going to be used very much. Its still in progress. I'm thinking about putting it on the back burner and pushing the puch to the front and finishing that project first.
