My 2000 Elite SA50P quest for 45mph

Hi All -

First off I wanted to say this site is a wonderful resource! I've been reading for hours every day. I just picked up a 2000 Elite S last week. It has 4500 miles on it but the previous owner went through the engine and replaced rings, seals & gaskets. The carb was cleaned and it has a new 90/90 rear tire.

When I first drove it I could only get it up to 30mph. My goal is 45mph without going the bbk route.

I pulled the exhaust off, the washer was still there so I used a dremel and grinding stone to remove it. I checked the oil pump and it's zip tied open and he was also running a little oil pre-mix in the tank. From what I've read this is because the SA50P oil pump won't get you to the 32:1 ratio. Pulled the plug and replaced with a new NGK BR6HSA. The old plug looked fine based on the color charts in the wiki.

The airbox had the 2nd tab punched out and then it looks like was glued shut again, I left it covered. He didn't remember what the main jet size was when it cleaned it so I'm assuming it's still the #68. I pulled the variator off and the restriction plate was already removed from the back. The rollers looked to be in good shape with no flat spots.

After putting it all back together I was able to get up to only 34mph GPS. I was really hoping to see closer to 40mph.

Parts that I've ordered so far:
#85 main jet
Speed variator kit from Taz
9 to 1 secondary gears from Taz

Should I hold off on riding it until I get the #85 main jet installed? Do you think what I've got planned will get me to 45mph or do you think what's already done should have me goign faster than 34? What other things could I look for? I was considering a new belt because the previous owner said he didn't change it out.

Thanks!

Hey I'm quite a nooby myself but you can definitely get to 45 mph. You should probably not ride your moped until you get the new main jet as a 68 jet isn't adequate and it's running too lean. You're going to want to punch out the second tab that in the airbox that was glued back on. And also you're gonna need a new ramp plate, about 25 degrees to go with the variator you got from taz (unless it comes with one). After doing that and installing the parts you ordered, you should see around 45 mph. You might also want to consider ordering an oil plug and ditch the zip tied oil pump and go strictly premix, 32:1. Hope this helps. I'm sure others will chime in to help as well.

Thanks bfowler! I definitely won't run it until the new jet is in. Hopefully that will be arriving Saturday or early next week.

I'll probably be installing the #85 jet and speed variator at the same time to see what that does for me. The variator does come with a ramp plate so hopefully it is steeper than stock.

Then the 9 to 1 gears last probably with a new belt.

No problem. That'll definitely get you to 45. Might also want to consider purchasing various roller weights sizes and possibly clutch springs to help with the take off. VT cycles sells a 36 pack of OKO roller weights in sizes 6-12 (3 of each) for $26. They also sell the oil plug I was talking about for $15 as well as clutch springs. Vtcycles.com

I am assuming they are the stock rollers but they are in good shape with no flats and with 4500 miles on the scooter they can't be the original. I'll measure next time I have the variator off.

Not exactly sure, somepeople on this forum say 45 can be reached but I dontonow how with stock pipe, carb etc. maybe if you opened up the intake ports etc I did all kinds of tuning on my stock and never got it past 41 but I am notthat great at trans tuning andi didntuse 90/90 tires.the 43mm kit from scooter assassins is less than 100 bucks andwill get you to 45 without much tuning other than bigger jets in the carb. so far my polini contests with v8. typhoon and 17.5 affects with 8.55 gears only does 55

47 with just a variator. Wow!

Well it's parked for now and my parts come in next week. I'll return with an update once I get a chance to install them.

4/8/2013 Update:

I finally had a chance to tear into the carb and replace my #68 main jet with a #85. I also punched out the 2nd tab in the air cleaner box.

My parts from Taz seem to have gotten held up somewhere with USPS so we are working on sorting that out.

It's raining here so I haven't had a chance to try to start it after I got it all back together. While I had it torn apart I ran into a couple other things I have questions about.

First, on the top of the transmission case there was a black rubber grommet. Looks like this is called the "breather tube" on the transmission schematic. The only problem is that mine is missing the tube so it's just wide open. The part is cheap enough I was thinking about just buying the replacement tube. Or can I just pick a section up from the hardware? It looks like it is supposed to go to the bottom of the air cleaner box.

Second, how do I adjust the throttle cable on the top of the carb? When assembled my throttle grip has about 20 deg of slop and when I twist it in one direction the cable pushes down into the carb. Take a look at the picture to see what I mean.

Thanks again guys!
