2000 elite 50S - just bought and have some carb questions

Hey all,

I just picked up a cherry 2000 elite 50S. I'm not sure all of the mods that were done but he did put on a performance exhaust and I see the oil pump is zip tied wide open. The beast starts up and stays running no problem. When it's cold it takes right off but shortly after the throttle just bogs down to nothing. It appears with the black oil coming out of the exhaust that it's running rich. If I hit the throttle hard it will sometimes kick in and take off but you've gotta real play with it.

Running stock air box and stock carb from what I can see.

The exhaust is a technigas...blue/chrome.

I'm thinking possible air leak somewhere or needing a different jet.

Any thoughts.

Joe

Good point didn't even think of that. It's been awhile since I've had one of these gas consuming toys. I'm looking for a dark tan color for optimal mix right. Black...too rich...and tan or lighter...too lean?

By the looks of the black oil coming out of exhaust I'd be surprised if it was lean but you never know.

one other thing you may need to look at is the air filter ....

im not a fan of tying the oil pump all the way open at idle it gets to munch oil and no diffident at wide open ... better to put it back to stock if you can... if you have a bbk ( big bore kit ) better to put a small amount of oil in the gas tank....

leave it tied up. if not you risk seizing the piston. if it was all bone stock and nothing was modded on it then yes untie it. you will need to take the carb off and check what number jet is being used. if it got that black oilish looking thing coming out the exhaust. thats usually way to rich jetting. pull the plug and get a new one. also clean the filter and make sure the 2nd tab on the inlet of the outter cover of the airbox is punched out. if thats a stock cylinder on the bike, you should be running a 85-88 main jet

thanks bakaracer! I'm going to check out everything you mentioned. The muffler is not stock by any means and the oil pump is tied wide open. I'll check the air box and punch out tab if it's still there.

I'm not really trying to make this thing a drag racer...just a nice stable riding scooter.

I'll keep you updated with my progress.

that tecnigas pipe does make that stock cylinder come alive. you will have to check the trans setup so it will match the pipes needs.

Here is some more investigation with pictures. I hope evilone is still on the board because he helped me out with my last elite in case I can't trouble shoot it myself.

When I started it up tonight I noticed exhaust coming up from the engine area...as well as the muffler.

Upon further inspection I think there is a bad weld or crack/hole in weld. You guys can tell me if this was a hack job on the muffler manifold or not.

See pictures. That's where the exhaust was coming from.

Would this cause me to have really muffled acceleration once this warms up.

I checked out the airbox and it looks like someone cut about an 1/8" -1/4" slit out of the second tab but did not remove it fully.

Check out pics.

Does this exhaust bend at manifold look like someone cut and rewelded because they couldn't get the bend they needed with stock setup?

Joe

PS. I put in two shots because I still can't believe how clean this is for a 2000!

Is there a fix for that hole? I've heard JB weld doesn't do the job. I don't weld.

I think welding would be the only sure way. might try a muffler wrap but if it works it wont work for long.

Had a similar hole in an exhaust on my scoot the first block. I believe that's the reason I'm on bbk number 2.

I'm going to see if I can find some to weld it for me. No use patching it if that's not a true fix.

Do you think a hole there is what's causing it to run like crap?
