tuning 28oko and pg long

Post by TikiMan »

Hey, so im out riding my 81cc kit from taz with a 28oko and a pg long. I'm running a 55 pilot and a 165 main. I can't keep the scoot from running between 275and350 degrees. Is this normal? I've checked the plug and it looks correct. I also checked for an air leak and couldn't find one. So I'm wondering if my jetting is off?

I did some riding tonight about an hr and a half cruise temps reached 390-400 with the choke in some spots due to the cold air. Im in Chicago suburbs so weather changes daily. Ive been switching main jets between 162-168 and the a 58 pilot some days. Runs like a beast cruising 60mph plus on longer straights. But the 400 temp is what scares me. Im running the stock plug should I be switching to the extended high speed plug?

Running one step colder plug is suggested. Im a little concerned you might have an air leak ive built a very similar motor and the jets your running are big. And im at sea level. Maybe someone else will chime in and confirm that.

check the compression it could be too high and cause high temp spikes.

The main jet numbers sound way too big.

I have never heard of an 81cc bore kit= to large for a mini stroker and to small for a full stroker? if its a cheap taiwan kit i would go with a ngk-9 plug.

Its a 50mm kit from taz. I did a compression check and I'm at 140psi. Did a leak down and nothing seemed wrong. Reeds seem to have a tiny leak. It has been addressed same temps. I switched to a 162 main. It has way more pull and extra top end. But same temps. Got it up to 390 after a mile flat out.

Be careful continually running that temp, you also have to add in at least 5% for loss in constant cooling from the fan. Eventually its going to melt something.
How does the temp send unit look also? Is it oily at all? I found a trailtech send unit to allow an airleak after some time, I only realized it was leaking after the fact, but it was covered in oil. It burnt a hole in a very expensive piston. It seems that usually if everyone else is running the same jetting and you have a huge jump, theres an issue.
Just my 2 cents and I hope you get it figured out!

Im running the 10mm ring around one of the studs. Im at a loss of what to look for. So I will be swapping plugs soon and seeing what that does.

Ill be checking again tomorrow in the morning. If it was an aluminum kit I would expect to see higher temps and the ability to withstand the heat. So back on the lift to see whats happening.

How much pressure should I be sending into the motor for the leakdown test? I have a regulator valve on my tool and I can push up to 200 psi. I know thats way more than needed. Should I be matching my compression or running a little less into the motor? Thanks guys. Ill try and get some pics uploaded.
