bought my first scooter.... and im feeling buyers remorse

Post by Dingus Khan »

got a 86' spree with 1400 miles on it.. needed a little love, but after realizing 31mph is my max speed :bs: , I don't know if im the one to do it..... any ideas on how I can reach atleast 40-45 mph? prefer bolt on, would rather cash out than jank it up. I want to be happy with it and not wish I went the bandwagon route and got a ruckus....

40 to 45 mph is not something a spree is going want to do with out spending a ton of cash. And still that would be pushing the spree limits. I think that a different scooter might better suit your needs for the speeds you need than a spree can.

Bbk alone with Taz's jet and stock carb/gears/air box rips thirty plus easy (running very lean, hot, and seizing my bore). The bbk and gears is about $200 and a larger intake block was $25. I don't know what a properly jetted too speed within heat range will be though. Just a little excited!

That would almost make your heart explode ;-) I bet it takes a hec of a long time to get the grin off your face after driving a little spree that fast. That has to be with a dio swap though right? Now that I've done the BBK on the spree and had the fun doing that, Im kind of wishing I could get my hands on a dio motor for a swap and maybe even stretch it out ;-)

Many people have taken the path you propose regarding Spree modification.
Very little can be considered bolt-on speed to this bike.
Those who have succeeded have either swapped a more appropriate motor into the Spree,
or they have spent many dollars and hours of customization and fabrication.
This process is not at all friendly to those people who have little or no mechanical aptitude.
It is, no doubt, very satisfying to accomplish speed with Spree, but amateurs are going to be
hard-pressed to enjoy the same success as the seasoned and knowledgeable scooter enthusiast.
I refuse to consider owning another Spree in the future, unless it is mint, stock, and dirt cheap.
MUCH rather have ANY Aero or Elite 50....and this is strictly a personal opinion... :thumbwink:

thank you all for the replies. I think im going to dio swap or gy6. I have little mechanic skills from my dirtbike but my friend does it all and loves that stuff so he helps me with it if I hunt the info down. I don't mind dropping cash for custom mounts and what not, as I had to go that road with my dirtbike. I just get stuck on the unavoidable 35mph section of my routes and wish I had a few more cc for that 30-40 minute stretch of road. i just don't want get all janky to get the extra 4-6mph im looking for. parts lists and threads for any dio/gy6 swaps would be amazing. i don't really know what im supposed to search for to get searching in the right direction. again thank you all for your input. :2thumbs:

I was unhappy with my purchase when I found out my Elite S would only do 25mph, but with help from the GREAT guys on this forum I am happily motoring along at 35-40 now. And with almost NO cash spent! I think the guys are right, start with something more appropriate or consider a motor swap. I've learned enough that I might consider a build like that myself next year. :-)

I hate to say this but I think you will regret it if plan on driving this moped around reliable and safely at 35-45 mph. The spree is smaller than the elite, the suspension isnt that good, the brakes would be worse at higher speeds, they just feel "squirrely" at higher speeds.

I had two sprees and decided to sell them and by a 94 or newer elite I am glad I did.

just something to think I think for practical purposes the elite would be 10000 times better but if you want a unique/fast scooter as a project or hobby scooter then do the swap.
