Few extra MPH on my 96' Aero 50

Post by appleboy64 »

Hello, I currently have a 1986 Honda Aero 50 and am looking to squeeze a few more mph out of her. The scooter still has the the completely original af05e engine and I haven't done anything to it yet. I am only looking for a boost of about 3-5 more mph just to get it up to 40. My question is what would be the most economical way to get that little speed boost?
I have looked at some different weighted roller sets but I don't know if I need to get lighter or heavier ones for a speed boost and if those would even help at all.
Thank you for reading.

Try checking the service manual for the spec. on the belt width. If it's out of spec., it is costing you top end speed. Also pull the variator while you're in there and inspect the rollers for flat spots. Flat spotted rollers will cost you top speed also. Here is the link to free service manuals.

With a 90/90 rear tire and a ruckus variator with new rollers you will gain a solid 3-5 mph. Roller weight totally depends on you. I'm about 225 and I was pretty happy with some 7 gram rollers. But that's just me.

+1 - first check is belt and rollers - a good running stock '86 aero 50 should hit around 40

+1 - A Keli variator available from ebay or a ruckus vari from this site are both good choices to gain a few mph's. A larger tire 3.0 or 90/90 will add a tad more. Ruckus vari may require some metal shaving (search ruckus variator and should have plenty hits).

If your belt and rollers are in good shape, an after-market variator (without the restrictor plate behind the vari), and slightly larger tire should have you hitting in the low to mid 40's.
