makeup overrange question: variator +belt + rear pulley

Post by DirtyE »

It sounds like the zx rear pulley is a larger diameter alternative to the stock. Also, the polini for ruckus vario is the largest diameter front pulley? Is this the combo to go for then? What belt would you use with this?.

So much is different in dio land. Cheaper! You can get a full tranny for the price of an EVO 3 ceramic rear pulley for piaggio, or half the price of a 2k5 Malossi OR.

Yay!

My last build was a big evo 94cc piaggio sr50. Cylinder, crank pipe..oversized reedblock. Ceramic rear pulley, ss9 vario.
I never really got to ride it before I gave up on it. Things started to fail when I was tuning. I was mentally, emotionally, and most of all fiscally broken. I traded it for a bone stock mina LC SR50. I swore id never modify a scooter again. Then I got my elite for $100.

Whitey, a member here lives down the road from me. Hes got a sick collection of peds. Riding his 01 last year got me hooked again.

Just the evo pipe and trans set up was worth more than a stock Aprilia sr, I wish I knew you when you were selling it.

Malossi use to make an over range kit, I'm too lazy to look it up right now but maybe there's still one available.

With the larger diameter of the ruckus drive face you could use a longer belt than the zx malossi belt, right?

Greetings:

The ZX pulley requires the use of an 18mm wide belt. Those come in 654 and 669 lengths. The former doesn't ride the back pulley as high, so taller initial take-off gearing, perhaps better top speed. The 669 sits on the rim of the rear pulley, improving take-offs perceptibly, but can hurt top speed unless you use an oversized (94mm or more) front pulley as well. The Metropolitan belt at 661mm splits the difference, but it's a 28-degree angle (for reasons I can't begin to comprehend) and so doesn't grip as well until it wears in a bit.

Its all so confusing. Where to go, what parts to use. Im just glad these parts are relatively inexpensive. Ive never been too in to high speeds. The roads around my part of town are good for 0-45mph with an occasional stretch where 55 maybe necessary.
I believe I read the polini for ruckus vario is 94mm? Is that the only available oversized pulley?

Greetings:

Malossi-for-Ruckus is believed to be 97mm. If it's not Malossi, I had this diameter from some unknown brand a while back. The crankcase must be shaved at the starter housing for it to fit, and it's a good idea to shave down the belt cavity's various high spots if you run a ZX.

Solid advice wheels, I had a malossi belt get ruined after 2 rides a long time ago when I did not remove and smooth a decent amount of material from the starter housing, engine case, and trans cover. I even had to do remove starter housing and middle of the case material on zx50s when I go 97mm.

Greetings:

As far as I can tell, you can't run the back cover at all if you choose a 669 belt. The clutch needs cooler conditions anyway. Rain might be an issue, but if the bike is warm it's not a big deal.

The trans gear cover, not belt cover. I don't think the zx pulley will fit under a cover. I've never tried actually.

Greetings:

Yes, the cover physically fits, but the bolt channels foul the 669 belt in a couple of places.
