Which tire do you guys think i should run?

Post by Meatball »

I have a few sets of tires to choose from and Im just not sure what I should go with. Im torn! Tell me what YOU think would give me the best ride, grip, performance, etc...

Should I go with:
Kenda 3.00/10 F&R
Shinko 90/90/10 F&R
Dunlop 80/90/10 F&R
IRC 80/90/10 F&R

I just mounted a Kenda 100/90/10 to my rear rim and theres no way it will fit unless I start grinding away the case. I tried for 45min every different way, no go. Even though the numbers suggest its only "wider" than a 90/90/10 its not true. Its also taller....now I have to remove that tire from the rim and go smaller. The next tire I mount will be on there for good which is why I ask for guidance.

Basically the 3.00/10 and the 80/90/10 are the same width at 3.15 inches.

The 90/90/10 is 3.54 inches wide.

Its a matter of going with the wider "Shinko" tires or the thinner "Kenda" or "IRC" or "Dunlop" tires.

A 100/90 is 90 mm on the sidewall, a 90/90 is 81mm (supposedly). The first number is width of tread by millimeters from bead to bead, the second number is a percentage of the first number and represents the side wall height in relation to the tread, i.e. 90% of 100mm is 90mm, and 90% of 90mm is 81mm.

Btw, a 90/90 fits but usually requires a small spacer to prevent rubbing, I think a 3.50x10 will be just a hair too tall.

I did not know that, thx...

I slapped on the 90/90 Shinko's and they fit with no problems.

I tried everything to fit the 100/90 on and the tread rubbed the case, width was fine by just a hair. I even deflated the tire, popped the bead, mounted the rim with the loose tire on it, then seated the bead while it was in place. I thought once I got it past the muffler mounting brackets and the rim fully seated on the axle it would be fine. Once the tire was inflated it was locked in place by the case. The 100/90 is simply too tall for the rear of the SE50...period.

My choice of the three mentioned brands will always be Shinko.
Plenty of riders have no issue with Kenda, IRC, Cheng Shin, and other economy brands, but
my finding is that Shinko is a better gripping tire. The wear factors are about the same.
I have run Dunlop too...always more expensive, but I didn't like the performance.
As always, your mileage may vary.

The shinko was better? I was wondering cuz the tread looks different than most.

I went with Shinko 90/90/10...they are made in China so my assumption was they were of lesser quality than other brands. However, they get rave reviews everywhere I read online, including Motormike. Once weather gets better I will give my uneducated opinion on performance, grip, feel, etc...

Random info:

Shinko-China
IRC-Thailand
Kenda & Continental-Taiwan
I have two sets of Dunlop-one set is made in Thailand and the other in Japan
