has anyone ported a stock spree? what to expect?

Post by stevespree7 »

has anyone tried porting a stock spree? i am about to give her a try. anyone else experience major gains? what kind? low end? top end? did you open up ports? or did you reshape at all? I am going to try a making some auxiliary ports too if it works out. would be cool to hit 40 with a stock top end.

The only thing I've ever seen reported on Spree porting is failure to get any improvement... if you look over the Spree porting you'll find that it's extremely conservative, and that due to design it's hard to get exhaust to flow well (it's pinched on way out.)

Suggest starting with porting from bike like SE50/SA50 as a start, perhaps, and be ready with a fresh bore to put it back to stock if it doesn't work out.

That's all I've pretty much seen on stock porting as well, no real improvement. Maybe 1man8scoots might have something different to say about that, but he's the porting ninja. What have you done with it so far to improve it?

Motormike, just because I've been absent for a while does not negate my achievements :naughty: 42mph on a GPS with a "stock" bore. All these years and my record still stands :geekdance:

Your takeoff had to of really stunk. Brutal, but I suppose it is possible. Would like to see a video if you have one. What else had you done with it on the intake?

The trick with the stock bore is to not overdo it. Clean up all of the casting flaws and re-transition and polish up the exhaust port maybe widen it a little. I leave the timing along on the stock bore. I add some channels to the boost ports and do touch up on all the edges. Re chamfer all of the ports. Good hone. Image
Got a bit better performance out of all that. It was certainly snappier. And then I did the domed piston and the 84 head. Lots more snap for sure. Not a lot in the way of top end but helps get it up to speed. Every bit helps. I ported the intake and put the 86/87 reeds in place of the 84 ones I had then made carbon fibre reeds. All that with the mlm pipe it was pretty decent. If I had had an 86 or 87 motor it would have been a lot faster. 1man8scoots could probably massage one of those bores and really make it sing but if you don't have the luxury of sending a bore to him you can clean stuff up and get a little more go.

Greetings:

Others have swapped in the larger SB50 reed cage along with some intake port clean-up. Knife-edge the vertical splitter but DON'T remove it.

Cleaning up that intake port on the block really helps its pretty ugly on the spree. Very bad flow stock. This picture was while the job was in progress. Image the idea is to take away any flat surfaces and have smooth transitions. The top of the holes especially need the help. Here is the intake tube all touched up.Image
another easy trick is to bend the reed stopper open so that it just clears the case when you install the reed block. It really helps and is a quick easy mod.
