Crankcase re-assembly

I've always used a crank puller to assemble dirt bike and scooter cases (as the Honda service manual shows). But I noticed a lot of Europeans on YouTube and forums use the heatig method(heat up crank case to expand the metal). Which method better? And your thoughts?

I use a hammer, not recommended

Once you use heat, you'll never go back. It slips together, no banging or fuss. I put my cases on my space heater in the garage, they get uncomfortably hot, then it literally slides together.

Do you freeze the crank and bearigs too?

Greetings:

If the cases are oil-free, and Ms. Sum_Azn isn't on the premises, heating to 300 or so AND freezing the crank makes things so much easier. I've done the same thing to install the case bearings, and had one literally drop into place without a single blow. The frost on the bearing acts as a lubricant and the clearance improves enough for force not to be necessary. Welding gloves make it all possible.

@Wheelman - I've always wondered if the frost on frozen bearings has any ill affects later on.
Have you ever had any issues e.g. with disassembly?

Sum_azn_girl doesn't use the oven so it's fair game... wish she did though :eyeroll: haha.

Greetings:

Never had an issue. That water boils away pretty quick with a 300-degree case, plus it's bathed in oil...
