87 Spree with MLM Pipe - Improve Takeoff / Lowend

Post by gpgstcharles »

I have an 87 Spree totally stock with the exception of the MLM sidebleed pipe and slightly taller tires (2.75x10's instead of the 2.5x10's). Before I purchased the sidebleed pipe I cooked the stock exhaust to get the carbon out and repainted it. It ran fine but like most on here I was looking for a little more power. I had smooth more responsive accelerations with the stock pipe and would top out around 30-32 with the taller tires. When I put the mlm pipe on I also put in a new factory air filter because mine was basically disintegrating. Now I have way less on the low end until I get to about 12-15 mph then she takes off like a rocket and can hit 35 on flats. What can I do with my current setup to improve takeoff and really get the most out of the scoot?

modify your clutch. you need stiffer springs, or lighten your clutch shoes. you need more rpm before the clutch engages

Leo Vince 2500rpm springs will help. You lose bottom end with the MLM and there isn't much you can do except stiffer springs for a higher rev launch.

You can find a set here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/331475908975

You'll want to use the yellow springs.

Anyone still have a line on 2000 or 2500 springs for the spree clutch? Haven't been able to track anything down.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/163184393887 And again, you'll want to use the yellow springs. On a Yamaha Jog, they kick in at 2,000, on a Spree, they will kick in around 2400.

I’ll take anything at this point, I have a pipe and speed pulley, getting 39/40, but the pipe doesn’t hit until around 25, 15-up is ok, 0-10mph is barely acceptable for my wife and daughter, but I’m 225 lbs, not 105 or 130 like them.

I always thought the springs were idle + 1000, 1500, or 2000. Is that wrong?

Its been years since I messed with the Spree but I remember a certain Malossi spring kit fit perfectly. It came with 3 sets like alot of the kits do. I used the tightest set in the kit while paired with the Taz Gears...it was still an absolute slug on take-offs. It would rev up high, then engage clutch, then bog back down as it slowly pulled away from a stop because it just doesn't have the guts for a decent launch. It just wasnt safe or practical for riding in city traffic. Good luck to you.

To clarrify what that 1000, 1500, 2000 etc means. It's the point in RPM in which the clutch will engage. Centrifugal force causes the clutch pads to pull out and grip onto the bell. What the springs are doing, is giving a resistance to this force up until a certain rated RPM range. Has nothing at all to do with idle, except that, like on a Spree say, the factory specifications call for idle speed to be 1800rpm +/-100rpm. Now clearly, you don't want the clutch pads to engage before this point, so 1500 rpm springs are out of the question. The red Leo Vince springs semi work, but they tend to engage a little bit after or right at the 1800 rpm range which can be a pain in the rear at stop lights, or when starting the bike cold. This is why you use the Yellow springs for maximum tension. Highly doubtful that 2400 rpm launch will make much if any difference at all, but it is in general practice, a good idea to change out those springs if you have had your clutch repadded, or, if the bike shows signs of the back wheel spinning at anything lower then 1800 rpm. I do all my tuning using a tach for accuracy, would be a good investment to make, and you can pick one up on Amazon for under $20. Makes tuning the carb, and diagnosing clutch issues so much easier.

Already have a tach, I will take any oomph I can get. I'll give them a go. It can't hurt anything (except clutch pads). If it bogs pack down as least I'll get a little "push" when it engages.

I agree, I wouldn't want these it traffic at my weight, but it's acceptable with the wife daughter on it.

Did you ever get those springs on and test them out? Wondering if I should pursue this...
