Advise on building for acceleration

Post by Jaygen »

I would like to upgrade my 2001 SA50p (deresticted) so it has wheelie pulling torque.
My current upgrades are only poloni variator w/6.9 rollers, malossi fly clutch with 1k RPM over stock springs/malossi white contra spring.
Everything else is stock, I can hit 42-44 mph all day but it takes awhile to get there.
What build is best (bore kit, exhaust, gearing..etc) for crazy fast acceleration up to about 40-50 mph?
I dont want or need to 60 or 70. Ill be happy with 50mph but quick getting there. :coolcruise:
I would like to keep stock carb and intake if thats possible for now..

Polini contessa bbk, 9:1 secondary gears. Keep stock pipe, carb, air box and maybe consider a cht temp gauge. Wheelman-111 says his gets to over 55 with these listed items.

Greetings:

Everything Bones and Meat said is spot-on. I have the Iron Polini, a ZX setup and 9.1 gears, all else is stock. The ZX pulley might slow top speed a little if you keep stock gears. Larger Polini-for-Ruckus variator matches it up well. They do make a 9.80:1 secondary gear set if you prefer wheelies to top speed. Should still run over 50.

The Contessa is in..wow what a difference! Only 100 miles on the fresh mill. Running Stock carb with 90 jet, stock air cleaner, YMS V8 pipe, Malossi Delta clutch with white springs
The front end comes up at only 3/4 throttle..amazing.
One question.. Im still running stock gears right now and can hit 50 mph at about 8200 RPM, temps are good, if I go with 9:8 gears will it slow my acceleration a lot?

Get the 16*42 (9:1) gears and use a 1000 center spring and lighter roller weights. That will give you plenty acceleration off the line. Your 72 cc will power thru the low end as long as you can keep the rpm's above 7K on take off and that should get you close to 60.

Ok thanks for the response.... I'm currently running the Malossi white center spring, not sure if it's 1000 or not?
Also running polini 6.9 rollers, I have lighter ones that came with the variator I think they are 5.6.
I'm going to order the gear set.. Any suggestions on a good brand of gears?

Everyone that has them is out except for this taiwan brand should be fine. https://www.scootertuning.ca/en/gears-s ... -90cc.html
Use a new gasket and make sure it don't leak! Order some 6.0, 6.3, and see if those improve take off shift and get a 1000 spring not malossi or polini brand. NCY makes a 1000 from scooter swap shop get 2 as these wear out after about 2-2500 miles but they are available so scoop up 2. https://www.scooterswapshop.com/collect ... tra-spring
Maybe you need heavier springs in the shoes (3) so you don't lock up so quickly. Get a few different sizes also to try out. Each person has a preference so I can't say what you would like best. What brand belt are you using?

Just using a new OEM belt.
My clutch currently engages around 3000-4000 rpm right now. I'm looking for stiffer springs... Seems like the power band really kicks in over 6000.

OEM belt is perfect. Keep an eye on width. Less than 14.85 mm you start to lose top speed. New is about 15.1 mm. Aftermarket belts can vary widely so stick to one you trust. Yes above 6K for engagement with 9:1 gears is best. Stock gears don’t need that high of rpm. But balance between the roller weights and clutch springs will give you longer life of cvt parts. It’s called tuning the transmission. Anytime you change one or more of those parts you will have to “tune them again for optimal performance. If you change your exhaust pipe to something more radical then you might need to adjust the main jet in the carb, and your cvt setup also to obtain optimal performance.

Installed 9:8:1 gears yesterday, stiffer contra spring NYC(1000 rpm), lighter rollers, top speed remained unchanged at 50 mph, same as stock gears.
I was expecting hit at least 55. Noticed a lot of low end gone too, going have to re tune the trans.

10:1 gears are limited still. I use 9:1(16*42)with stock bore for about 47 mph I’m guessing. Your 72cc should push way past 50. It could be the ncy contra spring has not broke-in yet plus your 10:1 gears. Perhaps you’re running rich also?
