So I’ve been reading around forums about variatior swaps on sprees. I’ve noticed that the main issue is space (case cover, bendix and kickstart) but the thing is my spree doesn’t have a case cover bendix or kicker, I just drill start it. So what I’m asking is that since I don’t have any of the clearence issues to worry about will a af16 or other kind of variator bolt up? Is there anything I’m forgetting?
Thanks

Re: Variator question
Greetings:
I suppose if you start it with a drill and don't run a cover, it is possible to bolt up any kind of transmission you can. However, the length of crankshaft and splines protruding from the case will limit your options to a pretty narrow belt and rear pulley, perhaps adapted from something in the Moped world. Honda itself did produce a variated version of the Spree in the ultra-rare, and non-US market model called the Pal. Few people have seen this scooter, and I don't recall anyone calling out the specs or details of the design.

Re: Variator question
I believe the honda pal is actually the same basic scooter as the SB50 Elite “E” which was made in years 1988-1990 and had the spree “AF05” motor

Bones is correct, as usual. But Honda must have specified a different crankshaft to allow room for a sliding pulley, pulley boss, etc., or I don't imagine the CVT would have much "range" from Start position to Top Speed.

Re: Variator question
The Pal used the Elite E crankshaft. The Pal2 had a longer crankshaft and corresponding belt cover to accommodate the variator. The SE50 with the variated full size AF05E engine produced more power and was quicker than the variated Pal2.
