Kymco speedo on an Elite?

Post by Karman »

I came across this Elite for sale on CL in Hawaii:

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/mcy/697235083.html

Whats up with the speedo? Is that kmph or mph? Its ugly, but it would be nice to have for "testing".

Burnt Toast was going to look it up and find the retail on it for me but he spaced out and never checked.

Paging Burnt Toast...

So is Kymco still making a carbon copy of the Elite somewhere in the world? I noticed the JDM spec tail light is also a Kymco part.

Nope.

The bike looks nothing at all like an elite. But the speedo fits right in a elites headset. And the tail light off the kymco just happens to be the same size, shape and look as the True Japan honda elite tail light. (getting a real japan tail light off a japan elite is very pricey.) So in the states when you buy a "japan tail light" you are really buying a kymco ZX50 tail light.

Seriously he always says some trippy stuff haha

But yeah, my fault guys I did space out.. well actually! I found a neat lil fix that "could" possibly convert my kph on the stock Elite speedo into mph! This would mean stock speedo would show up to 60mph  Talk about sleeper speedo, since only the rider would know the kph is actually mph heh

..Yet after a while I've just gotten used to the stock speedo and haven't gone forward with that mod lol

I'd ballpark that Kymco speedo at about $70 though, I know one for my Vento runs about $80 brand new..
projects galore :nerd:

I'm guessing a reduction gear assembly to go between the cable and the speedo head. It would have to work at the same ratio that would convert km to miles.

Its 2 gears in a box, doing the math and buying the gears would be the hardest part, isnt hard to make a box with two pieces of allthread tube welded on along with a couple gears inside.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

in the 4x4 world where tire sizes and axle gears get changed often, these converter type boxes are common to keep speedometers accurate. i wonder if a company that makes these could help?
