Proper procedure is to put put around the yard to warm it up and then proceed to constantly vary throttle, run it up to top speed and slowly roll it back down for a whole tank of gas. All under a load of course.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

There must be a LOAD applied for proper break in! that is very key, recall reading it way back when.
Definitely ride, and start varying throttle right off the bat. Rings seat within first 15minutes, I consider fully broken in after 100mi. Keep varying throttle till then as much as possible and dont hold WOT for too long.
