How to winterize / long term store your scooter

Post by noiseguy »

From a variety of contributers (mostly Bear45-70 and myself.)

---------------
How to winterize your scooter:

Fall is a good time to change the trans oil, which requires removing the oil, fuel tanks as well as the battery and LHS rear cover. Once those are out, remove the plug, tip on side to drain.

1) Top off gas tank and put some fuel stabilizer (Stabil) into the fuel tank then run the scooter for 10 minutes to insure that stabilized fuel in into the carb. You can also go one step further and drain the carb altogether into a pan, just unscrew the bottom screw on the carb a bit and it will drain out the bottom. Some also add SeaFoam to the tank at the same time. And some don't bother with Stabil either, as gas can take awhile to break down, but a full tank will prevent tank rust.

2) Fog the cylinder using commerially available fogging oil (not WD40 or like). There are two ways to do this. I typically remove the plug and fog the cylinder directly, then turn the engine over (set in "stop" position a few times. You can also try this: Fogging oil into the air intake behind the air filter. Light spray at first until smoking heavily and then heavy spray until engine dies, per Bear.

3) Spray exterior of engine and tranny with a corrosion guard.

4) Disconnect battery unless you have a battery maintainer for it. If the temps in storage will be below 50-60F, bring the battery inside.

5) Make sure tires are aired up to max pressure.

6) In the spring, check air cleaner and clean/oil or replace as necessary. Connect battery and start on old plug. Once motor quits smoking, install new spark plug.
