Greetings:

If you budget is $10K, I'll presume you are prepared to buy new.
In that case, Kawasaki has replaced the EX250 Ninja with the 300. It sounds like a minor change, but the addition of a Spree's worth of displacement brings a whole new riding experience. The 250 had to have its neck wrung with RPM to produce any kind of acceleration. The 300 has torque below 10K making it a much more useful, easier to ride and frankly less Drama to ride.

But scuffing brand-new plastic can be heartbreaking, and more likely than not to happen with your first bike. Consider Noisy-guy's suggestion and dig up a late GS 500 F Suzuki for a far better all-around ride. Pre-scuffed, you can probably find one closer to $3K and begin saving for a more capable replacement, if you need one.

i have been on dirt bikes my entire life ...my first road bike was a 1980 xs850lg and i love it been a great bike for me ...but if i was starting out never owning anything on two wheels with a clutch i would go for a light bike..under 500 pounds . power is not a issue in my opinion until u need more ....anything smaller then a 600 is like hoping off ur dio and getting on a spree.
